RALEIGH, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team continued with their Fall season by taking part in the 12-team North Carolina State Invitational this weekend, held at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
The Wildcats sent four players to compete in both singles and doubles during the invite. Jack Riazzi, Ricky Saad, David Hager and Evan Watkins all came away with at least one win during the weekend's competition.
In the White Singles draw, Riazzi and Saad each opened with strong wins to advance to the second round. Riazzi netted a 6-0, 0-6, 6-1 victory over Alvaro Cintas of Tennessee Tech, while Saad also earned a win in three sets, taking a 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 decision over his William & Mary opponent. Both Wildcats lost their next matches to move over to the consolation side, where only Saad scored a win, picking up a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 triumph.
Hager played in the Red Singles draw and fell in all three of his matches to William & Mary, Tenn. Tech and ECU.
Watkins played three three-set matches, coming away with one win on the weekend. After falling 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 in the main draw of the Grey Singles, the senior won his first consolation match by the score of 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. He then played another tough three set match, falling in the end 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 to Sam Taylor of Radford.
Teaming up in the White Doubles draw was Saad and Riazzi, who lost their first two matches to teams from GSU and GW, before closing with an 8-5 victory over a pair from Radford.
In the Grey doubles draw, Watkins and Hager teamed up. After a first-round bye, the duo lost in a close 8-7 match to Elon, but came back to earn an 8-3 victory against ECU.
