Wildcats to Open SoCon Action With Tri-Meet Friday

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson wrestling team returns to the friendly confines of Belk Arena Friday night to open up Southern Conference competition with a tri-meet. The Wildcats take on Virginia Military Institute and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Match 1 – SIUE vs. VMI – 4:30 p.m.
Match 2 – Davidson vs. SIUE– 6:00 p.m.
Match 3 – Davidson vs. VMI – 7:30 p.m.
Headlock on Hunger
The Davidson wrestling team will be supporting Headlock on Hunger, an initiative that aims to help provide food for children who are dealing with hunger at home. The team will be collecting canned food at all home matches. At the end of the season, the food collected will be brought to the Southern Conference Championship.Â

About Davidson
Davidson enters the match 4-7 overall. Senior captain Ian Solcz leads the team with an 11-8 mark at 197-pounds, while classmate Kevin Birmingham is 10-5 overall at 149-pounds. Birmingham also leads the team with eight pins.

In its first competition of the New Year, the Davidson wrestling team posted a 31-18 win over Anderson University. Behind pins from Kevin Birmingham, Patrick Devlin and Scott Patrick, the Wildcats won seven of the 10 bouts.

Anthony Elias got things rolling for Davidson at 133 lbs., with a 5-2 decision over Zak Hale before Kevin Birmingham posted a pin over Charlton Clark at 141 lbs. Patrick Devlin pinned Anderson's Jared Costa at the 3:49 mark at 165 lbs, while Nathaniel Powers padded Davidson's lead with a major decision at 174 lbs. Scott Patrick earned his first pin of the 2014-15 season at 184 lbs. The fifth-year senior pinned Michael Gallagher at the 4:27 mark. At 197 lbs., Ian Solcz collected a 6-2 decision over Austin Price, while Eddie Isola earned a 13-6 decision over Wyatt McCrackin.

Virginia Military Institute enters the weekend with a 5-4 overall record and a 1-1 conference mark. In SoCon action, VMI fell to Gardner-Webb early in December 31-9 before most recently topping Campbell 45-8. VMI is led by Juan Adams at 285 lbs., and Dalton Henderson at 125 lbs. Adams owns a 14-9 record, while Henderson is 13-6.

SIUE carries a 2-13 overall record and an 0-1 conference mark into Friday's tri-meet. The Cougars fell to Appalachian State, 34-9, on Jan. 7. The Cougars are led by 174-pounder Jake Residori who owns a 16-9 record, while Derek Nagel is 11-10 at 184 lbs., and Chris Johnson is 12-11 at 285 lbs.
