BLACKSBURG, Va. — The Davidson women's tennis team opened its 2015 season on the road, falling to nationally ranked Virginia Tech, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.

The Wildcats began the match in impressive fashion, winning the doubles point, but were unable to carry over the momentum as the No. 57 Hokies swept all six singles positions for the win.

The two schools were playing each other for the third straight season to open each others campaigns.

The pair of Jenna Brunner and Elaina Cummer began things in doubles action by scoring a nice 6-2 win over Tech's No. 1 doubles team, which came in ranked 50th in the nation. Then to seal up the point, the freshmen duo of Anna Catharine Feaster and Ally Sexton netted a 6-4 win at No. 3.

Three of the four Wildcats fell short in their singles matches. Cummer at No. 1 and Feaster at No. 2, dropped 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-2 decisions. Brunner played at No. 3 singles and fell 6-4, 6-0 to her Hokie opponent.

At No. 6, Cassidy Shell dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision in her first career Spring match.

Sarah Stein and Ava Todd each represented Davidson at No. 4 and 5 singles, respectively. Stein nearly forced a third set, falling 6-1, 7-5, while Todd, making her collegiate Spring debut like Feaster and Shell, dropped a 6-1, 6-2 match.

Davidson returns home to start a four-match homestand, hosting Arkansas State, Jan. 31, for its home opener.
