DAVIDSON, N.C. – Quarterback Mike Sheehan threw three touchdown passes and seven Catawba rushers totaled 310 yards, as the Indians defeated Davidson, 35-7, Saturday night in Richardson Stadium.
Davidson falls to 1-1 on the young season, while it was Catawba's season opener.
J.P. Douglas completed 19 of 29 pass attempts for 117 yards and two interceptions for the Wildcats, targeting freshman Cam Cheuvront seven times for 53 yards, while William Morris hauled in six catches for 60 yards. Matt Casey made a career-high 14 tackles to lead Davidson's defense in the category, while Myles Atkins matched his career high of 10 and also forced a fumble. Bryant Bednarek, who recorded a sack, and James Gessner also had fumble recoveries.
For Catawba, Sheehan finished with 174 yards passing, completing 12-of-13 pass attempts, and he also rushed eight times for 56 yards to rank second in the category, as Trey Mashore led the Indians with 78 yards on eight carries. All three of Sheehan's touchdown passes came in the first half, as the Indians built a 28-0 halftime lead. Kenyon West (1 catch, 30 yards), Carlos Tarrats (4 catches, 46 yards) and Tyler Hamilton (3 catches, 43 yards) hauled in the three touchdown receptions, respectively.
The Wildcats started off strong, moving 45 yards on their first possession to Catawba's 29-yardline before being forced to punt, but Atkins was able to punch the ball free during Catawba's ensuing offensive possession, and Bednarek recovered it at Catawba's 40. However, the prime field position went to waste as Jamal Lackey intercepted a screen pass and returned it 67 yards for a 7-0 Catawba lead with 8:33 left in the first quarter.
Sheehan connected on touchdown passes on his next two drives, as he connected with West on a 30-yard pass to complete a five-play, 64-yard drive with 4:42 left in the first, and then he found Tarrats on a 31-yard pass to cap a 12-play, 88-yard drive early in the second quarter. He then found Hamilton with a 22-yard pass with just 2:43 remaining in the half for the four-touchdown advantage.
David Burgess capped the scoring for the Indians on the first drive of the second half, finishing a six-play, 76-yard drive with an eight-yard touchdown run.
Davidson looked to get back into the game on its first second-half possession, but saw a field goal attempt ring off the left upright after a 19-play, 64-yard drive.
The 'Cats lone touchdown came on a one-yard run by David Rogers with 7:37 remaining in the game.
Davidson will hit the road for the first time this season next Saturday when they visit VMI.
