WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball squad posted a 3-0 win over N.C. Central before falling to Presbyterian to finish the Wake Forest Invitational with a 1-2 mark.
Davidson jumped out to an early lead in the first set, 13-7, and held a comfortable 23-15 lead heading into the stretch. N.C. Central, however, would not go away quietly and used a 4-0 stretch to cut the deficit 23-19, before a kill by Mary Harriet Moore put the Wildcats in position to take match point, and on the ensuing play a kill by Kelly Friers gave Davidson the set, 25-19, and a 1-0 lead in the match.
Davidson never trailed in the second set as it rolled to a 25-14 victory. Moore recorded four kills, while Emily Franklin and Hannah Rau added two kills to pace the offense. Anastasia Owen also contributed to the defense as she notched five digs.
The third set was a back-and-four affair as the teams found themselves tied 6-6 early on. Davidson opened up a bit of breathing room, 9-6 off a Sarah Robert's service ace and extended its margin to 21-15 on a Moore and Michelle McNeight block. The Eagles once again rallied with four consecutive points before the Wildcats responded, scoring three straight points to take the frame off a bad set, 25-19.
Rachel Earnhardt the day with nine kills and nine digs, while Derochie had 28 assists and seven digs. Moore finished the match with eight kills and four blocks.
In the final game of the weekend, Davidson fell to Presbyterian, 3-1. In the first set, Davidson held a brief 6-4 lead, but an 11-0 run by Presbyterian let the Blue Hose jump out in front, 21-14. Presbyterian finished off the set, 25-20.
The Wildcats responded in the second set jumping out to an early 12-9 advantage, but the Blue Hose fought back to even the score at 15. The two teams traded points before three consecutive kills by Rau secured the set, 25-23.
Back-and-fourth action dominated the third set, which featured three lead changes and five ties. A 5-1 run by the Wildcats pushed the score to 20-17, but Presbyterian found an answer and registered match point, 25-19.
A Rau kill evened the score at 20 down the stretch in the fourth set, but the Wildcats could not hold on as an Ashton Stewart kill gave Presbyterian the set, 25-23.
The Wildcats will return to the court Sept. 12-13 for its annual Wildcat Classic at Belk Arena.
