Strong First Day for Wildcat M. Tennis at Davidson Invite

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Four Wildcats went a perfect 2-0 on the day in singles as the men's tennis team completed their first day of the Davidson Invitational at the Covington Tennis Courts against Charlotte, Appalachian State and USC-Upstate.
The invitational is a points system, with points being determined based on position. The No. 1 singles position is worth 16 points and going two points down at each position to No. 8, which is worth two points. The top doubles spot is worth eight points and going down to No. 4, which is worth two.
Davidson played 15 singles matches and four doubles matches on the first day, facing USC-Upstate and App. State.
"It was a great effort from the guys today and a solid start, they played well," said head coach Drew Barrett. "We are happy with how we played to start of the tournament and look forward to finishing out strong tomorrow."
Earning a pair of wins on the afternoon were junior Evan Watkins, sophomore Zack Zapatero, and the freshmen duo Shamael Chaudhry and David Hager.
Watkins, playing at No. 7 singles, earned eight points on the afternoon. He netted a 6-4, 6-2 decision over ASU to start the day and then closed with a three-set victory (4-6, 6-3, 6-2) against USCU.
Earning 12 points on the afternoon was Zapatero, who scored two singles wins at No. 6. He started with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph vs. his Mountaineer opponent and then scored another straight set decision, 6-3, 7-5, vs. the Spartans.
Hager played in his second Fall event of the season and had a strong showing. The first-year player rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 straight-set victory at No. 4 and followed that up with a solid 6-2, 6-1 decision vs. USCU. He finished with 20 points on the afternoon.
Rounding out the quartet of unbeatens was Chaudlhry, who was playing in his first career collegiate event. He opened the day with a three-set thriller, dropping the first set 4-6, before coming back for a pair of 7-5 wins to earn his first victory. He then cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win vs. USC-Upstate to give himself a team-best 24 points on the day.
Also earning singles wins on the day was freshmen Artem Khrapko and Jack Riazzi along with Jordan Hart. Khrapko and Riazzi were also playing in their first career Fall events. The duo each won their singles matches vs. ASU, taking home 7-5, 6-0 and 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 wins, respectively, at the No. 2 and 8 positions.
Hart opened the day with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles, before falling to his Spartans opponent, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles the duo of Ricky Saad and Alex Howard scored an 8-6 victory against App. State at No. 3 for four points. Following them with a victory was J.B. Gough and Hart, netting an 8-1 decision at No. 4 to earn two points.
The Wildcats wrap up their own invitational Sunday, with play starting at 11 a.m.
