DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team gears up for its second Fall event when they play host to the Davidson Invitational this weekend, Sept. 27-28, on the hardcourts of Covington Tennis Courts.
The Wildcats, who opened the Fall season at the Georgia Invitational two weekends ago, will welcome USC-Upstate, former Southern Conference-foe Appalachian State and cross-county rival Charlotte to the invite this weekend.
"I'm looking forward to this weekend and our first home tournament of the year," said head coach Drew Barrett, who is entering his ninth season. "We have a very talented and young group ready to hit the courts and show what they can do. It should be a great tournament with Charlotte, USC-Upstate and App. state coming to town, and we look forward to the challenge."
Play begins Saturday, Sept. 27, at 10 a.m. with singles-doubles-singles begin played in that order. The invite itself will be a flighted individual format with eight singles flights and four doubles flights. Sunday the teams will start play at 11 a.m. and the order of play will go doubles-singles-doubles to wrap up the weekend.
Four Wildcats represented the team at the Georgia Invite two weekends ago. Three of the four players, Zack Zapatero, Jordan Hart and David Hager, each scored a singles win over the weekend. In doubles action, J.B. Gough teamed up with Hager to have the best showing, earn an 8-6 victory and reach the round of 16.
Davidson will have three more Fall events after this weekend, going to the Virginia Invitational (Oct. 3-5), followed by a trip to the Wake Forest Invitational (Oc. 10-12), before finishing out at the ITA Carolinas Regional (Oct. 16-19).
