'Cats Split a Pair of Matches at Charleston Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Davidson volleyball team spilt a pair of matches Saturday to wrap up play at the College of Charleston Invitational. The Wildcats fell to Kent State, 3-0, in their first match before defeating Mercer, 3-0.
Hannah Rau was named to the All-Tournament team as the junior finished the week with 30 kills, 51 digs and seven block assists.
"This week was a great test for our team," said head coach Chris Willis. "We got a chance to see a lot of our players in competition for the first time and the results were very encouraging. I can't wait to see how much we improve over the next week."
Michelle McNeight led the attack against Kent State with eight kills, while Mikayla Derochie contributed two kills, 31 assists and two blocks. Mary Harriet Moore added seven kills and four blocks.
Despite holding the lead throughout the opening frame, Kent State went on a 6-1 run to secure the set The Flashers opened the second set with a 17-11 margin, before the 'Cats used a 9-3 stretch to tie the score at 20, but it wasn't enough as Kent State claimed the second set 25-22. Following a see-saw opening to the third frame that saw eight lead changes and nine ties Kent State held on to seal the victory, 25-23.
Davidson rebounded in the final match of the week to earn its first win of the 2014 season. The Wildcats held a 21-11 lead in the first set following a Rau kill before back-to-back kills from Earnhardt and Franklin gave the Crimson set point, 25-15.
Mercer owned a 10-9 lead midway through the second set but was unable to hold the lead. Kills from McNeight and Franklin moved the lead to four points, at 23-19, and a kill by Franklin helped to hold off a late rally, 25-21.
Mercer once again held its own in the third set and took a 22-21 advantage heading down the stretch, but a kill from Kelly Friers allowed the Wildcats to regain the upper hand and put the match away, 25-23.
Rau paced the offense with team-high 13 kills while Earnhardt chipped in 11 kills against the Bears.
Davidson returns to action next weekend with a trip to Winston-Salem for the Wake Forest Invitation Sept. 5-6.
