DAVIDSON, N.C. — The postseason accolades continued for senior women's tennis player Brites Moniz-Soares as she was named to the 2014 women's at-large Capital One Academic All-District III First Team, as announced recently by the Collegiate Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
As a first team selection, Moniz-Soares will be eligible for consideration for the Capital One Academic All-America Team. Dating back to 2004, Moniz-Soares becomes just the third Davidson women's tennis player to earn a spot on the at-large team, joining Kelly Fillnow and Katherine Hatch who each were named to the 2004 all-district team.
A native of Angra Do Heroismo, Portugal, Moniz-Soares earlier this season was a 2014 All-SoCon First Team pick and just recently was picked as one of four Wildcat student-athletes to earn the Northwestern Mutual Student-Athlete Spotlight award.
The senior finished up an outstanding four-year career this Spring for the women's tennis program. The Wildcats' No. 1 singles and doubles player, Moniz-Soares went a team-best 14-10 in singles and then added a 12-10 record in doubles with partner Elaina Cummer. She capped off her last season by winning her final two matches in both singles and doubles, including a 6-2, 6-1 singles victory and 8-2 doubles win vs. Wofford in the Southern Conference Tournament.
After her strong season, Moniz-Soares was named to the all-league first team to become the program's 13th player overall to earn a spot on the top team. It was her second time earning All-SoCon honors after being named to the conference's second team in 2012.
She finished her four-year career with a 44-41 singles mark, with 16 of those wins coming vs. SoCon foes. She also collected another 35 wins in doubles play.
In the classroom, Moniz-Soares excelled with a 3.96 grade point average while majoring in economics. She was a three-time SoCon All-Academic Team pick and was named a SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week, Jan. 30, 2013.
