CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Davidson men's track senior Andrew Lantz and women's track junior Sarah Paddon both broke school middle distance records at the Virginia Challenge, hosted by the University of Virginia, this weekend.
Both are on the bubble looking to qualify for the NCAA East Regionals.
Lantz became the first Wildcat to break one minute, 50 seconds in the 800-meter run, finishing sixth in 1:49.76. He has held the school record in the event since his sophomore season, and now owns the Top-10 performances in the 800m in school history, as Douglas Noreen (1:51.06, 2007) was the last to be pushed out of the Top 10. Lantz bested his record of 1:50.09 set at last season's NCAA East Region meet.
Lantz is slated to compete again at the Wolfpack Last Chance Meet in Raleigh, N.C. on Friday and the Virginia Teck Hokie Twilight Qualifier on Sunday.
Paddon placed 10th in the 1,500-meter run in 4:22.90, also besting her own school record. She ran 4:24.54 just two weeks ago to claim the SoCon title in the event.
The student-athletes that have posted season-best times that rank in the Top 48 of their respective event(s) and declare to compete in them qualify for the two NCAA regional championship meets (East and West).
Lantz's time of 1:49.76 would have been good enough for 46th entering the weekend. His previous season best of 1:50.84 ranked him 88th.
Paddon entered the weekend ranking 59th, and her time this weekend would have placed her 45th.
The deadline for running an eligible qualifying time is May 18, and the list of student-athletes, by event, who have been accepted to compete in each preliminary championships competition will be announced on Thursday, May 22.
The 2014 NCAA East Region Championships will be contested May 29-31 in Jacksonville, Fla., hosted by the University of North Florida. The Top 12 runners in each event advance to the finals hosted by the University of Oregon, June 11-14.
