DAVIDSON, N.C. — Playing its second-to-last match of the regular season, the Davidson men's tennis team fell 6-1 to visiting Furman Wednesday afternoon in Southern Conference play at the Covington Tennis Courts.
Despite falling by five team points, the Wildcats (5-16, 2-7 SoCon) battled to the end in playing four of the six singles matches to a third set, before falling in three of them.
Furman (13-8, 7-1 SoCon) started the match off by winning the doubles point, though Davidson did not go down quickly. The 'Cats earned an 8-6 win at No. 3 by Ricky Saad and Alex Howard, the duo's third win of the season, setting up a showdown at No. 2. The team of Ethan Kallick and Evan Watkins went all the way to a tie-breaker, before falling in the end, 7-5, in the tie-breaker to give the Paladins the team point after they earned an 8-3 win at the No. 1 position.
In singles action, the 'Cats' lone point on the afternoon came from Kallick at No. 2. The senior won his first match of the season at No. 2 in dramatic fashion, by winning a 7-5 tie-breaker in the third set. He had split his first two sets, 6-2 and 4-6, to set up the final set. It was Kallick's third three-set match of the season as he moved to 8-10 overall.
Davidson could have easily took three more points as Connor Evins, Watkins and Saad all played to a third set. Evins, playing at No. 3, fell 6-0 in the first set, but came back for a 7-5 win in the next one, to force the third set. It was a back-and-forth affair that went all the way to a tie-breaker, which saw Evins drop 7-4.
Watkins lost his first set 6-2, but like Evins, regrouped for a 6-4 second-set win to force a final set. He came up just short as the sophomore lost a 6-4 decision at No. 5.
Playing his first career three-setter, Saad lost a close tie-breaker in the first set, but stormed back for a solid 6-1 decision in the second set. His run would end there though as he was defeated 6-3 at No. 6 to close out the match.
Davidson concludes the regular season with a 1 p.m. match against former SoCon-foe College of Charleston this coming Sunday, April 13.
