DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's lacrosse team opened Big South play in thrilling fashion, earning a 9-8 come-from-behind win in overtime vs. Winthrop Friday night in Richardson Stadium.
Davidson (5-5, 1-0 Big South) won its second straight contest that went down to the finish to push its overall winning streak to four in a row. Tuesday night saw the Wildcats win a 10-9 decision vs. Old Dominion in the closing minutes.
Down 6-1 with just over 23 minutes left, the Wildcats charged back with a 6-1 run to tie the game with 2:05 left in regulation and then netted a pair of goals in overtime for the victory.
Leading the rally was Emma Sissman, who scored Davidson's first goal to open the second half and went on to score two more in the half. Ann Fucigna got in on the action as well, scoring a pair of goals and assisting on one of Sissman's goals that made it 6-5 with 16:14 on the clock.
Katherine Rueger was a big hero as well on the night as she scored the tying goal at the end of regulation and then the go-ahead goal with 2:39 left in overtime.
Down 7-6 after Erin Doherty fired in her eighth goal of the season off Emily Cooke's team-leading 18th assist, Davidson continued to push on offense. It paid off when the Eagle's were called for a foul in the circle to set up Rueger's game-tying score on a free-position goal with 2:05 left.
Sissman nearly ended the game in regulation when her shot with 11 ticks left went off the post to force a six-minute overtime. After neither team scored in the first three minutes, both teams switched sides and the Wildcats were able to break through 21 seconds into the start of the next three minutes. Rueger slipped into the Winthrop zone on the left side and fired a shot top-shelf for her eighth goal of the year.
Fucigna iced the game with an empty net goal at the 1:28 mark. It proved to be the game-winner as Winthrop would score one last time with 48 seconds remaining on Jenna Kasmarik's 35th goal of the year.
Then on the final draw control, Emily Rademacher sealed it by winning the draw and the Wildcats ran out the clock.
Kasmarik paced Winthrop (3-8, 0-1 Big South) with three goals, while Shannon Gallagher and Logan McCarthy had two goals each. Krista Frowein added a pair of assists, both coming in the first half.
Winthrop jumped on Davidson early, racing out to a 5-0 lead after one half, with Kasmarik and Gallagher scoring twice in the first 30 minutes. McCarthy added her second goal to make it 6-1, before Davidson started its rally.
Rademacher (5) and Sissman (4) had a combined nine of Davidson's game-high 13 draw controls. The 'Cats also held a 23-19 edge on shots, while Winthrop picked up three more groundballs to the Wildcats' 13.
In goal, Katy Boyle again made some big saves and finished with six after a career-high 11 saves on Tuesday night.
Davidson takes the weekend off before hitting the road for a 7 p.m. Big South contest at Campbell Tuesday, April 8.
