CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The Davidson men's tennis team saw their season come to an end in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament when they dropped a 4-2 decision to ninth-seeded Chattanooga Wednesday afternoon at the Champions Club.
The Wildcats (5-18) had a 2-1 lead in team points, but saw the Mocs (7-13) take singles wins at No. 6, 1 and 2 to move on to face top-seeded Elon tomorrow.
Down 3-2, Ethan Kallick tried to push his singles match to a third set at No. 2 and possibly tie the team match. The senior went down to the wire in both sets, but came out with a tough 7-5, 7-6 defeat. His second-set tie-breaker went back and forth, but he lost 8-6, giving Chattanooga the clinching team point.
Davidson opened the match with a win at No. 2 doubles by Kallick and Evan Watkins with an 8-5 decision. It was the duos fourth win together. Chattanooga though came back to earn 8-6 and 8-5 wins at the two other doubles spots to take an early 1-0 team lead.
Watkins and Connor Evins came back to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead with singles wins at No. 5 and 3. Waktins had a strong 6-3, 6-2 straight-set victory for his second straight win and fifth of the season. Evins then scored the 'Cats' second team point with a 6-4, 6-2 win for his team-best 10th victory of the year and 31st of his career.
It was short-lived as the Mocs took wins at No. 6 and 1 to regain a 3-2 lead. Playing his final collegiate match was Robert Lightbourn at No. 1, dropping a 7-6, 6-3 match.
J.B. Gough was close to finishing off his singles match before the team match was decided. He took home a 6-2 win in the first set, but fell 6-2 in the next set to force the third set. He was leading 6-5 when play was stopped.
