DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team was looking to made it two wins in a row, but fell to visiting Appalachian State, 6-1, Wednesday afternoon at the indoor Knobloch Tennis Center in a Southern Conference match.
The Wildcats (4-13, 1-5 SoCon) were coming off a 5-2 win at Chattanooga Sunday, but were unable to solve ASU. The Mountaineers ran their record 6-8 overall and stayed perfect in league play at 3-0. They won their second straight following a six-match losing streak.
Davidson's one team point came from freshman J. B. Gough at No. 4 singles. The first-year player won his second match in a row in impressive fashion, cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Gough moved to an even 6-6 overall and 3-3 in league matches.
Evan Watkins went to a third-set super tie-breaker, but fell 10-8 to drop his match at No. 5. The sophomore had won the first set, but dropped a 6-3 decision in the second set, and with the team match having been decided, a super tie-breaker was played.
In doubles action, the pair of Watkins and Ethan Kallick nearly netted their third straight win at No. 2, but came up short in a tie-breaker to fall 7-6 in the match. ASU won the other two positions by the scores of 8-2 at No. 1 and 8-4 at No. 3.
Davidson remains at home and will play The Citadel Sunday, March 30, with match time set for 1 p.m.
