Wildcats Earn 3rd Seed Behind Dukes' Career Day, 83-67

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomore Dakota Dukes registered her ninth double-double of the season with a career-high 31 points and added 10 rebounds in leading Davidson to an 83-67 regular-season finale victory at Wofford Sunday afternoon in Benjamin Johnson Arena in Southern Conference women's basketball.
Davidson concluded the regular season at 14-15 overall and 11-7 in SoCon play, good for third in the league standings. The 'Cats will play sixth-seeded Samford next Saturday, March 8, at approximately 6:45 p.m. to open the SoCon Tournament at Kimmel Arena. They swept the Bulldogs during the regular season.
Like the first meeting between these two teams back in December, Davidson feed Dukes all afternoon and she converted. The forward, who scored 30 points and had 12 rebounds in the first meeting, went 10-for-17 from the floor and 11-of-16 at the free-throw line, tying career highs in both categories.
Dukes was not alone in the double-digit column with Laura Murray scoring 19 points, 17 of which came in the second half, and Hannah Early dropping in 11 points to go with seven rebounds and a career-high tying three blocks.
Shneeka Center gave the Wildcats a fourth in double figures with 10 points and seven boards off the bench.
Wofford (6-22, 4-14 SoCon) was led by Logan Morris' career-best 26 points, while Erin Frost chipped in 11 and Chanel Stokes had 10.
Murray (10) and Dukes (7) helped the Wildcats blow open the game, turning a 35-34 halftime lead into a 52-41 advantage by scoring all 17 of Davidson's points in a 17-6 run to open the new half.
Davidson continued to push the lead out, reaching the double-digit mark (61-50) on a triple from the corner by Murray at 9:26 and later senior guard topped off her stout second half with a pull-up jumper in the lay for the 'Cats' biggest lead at 78-58 with three minutes left.
The Wildcats' second half saw them score 48 points on 63 percent shooting (17-27) to finish the game at 52.7 percent. The defense held Wofford to just 36.8 percent shooting for the game and forced 18 turnovers, scoring 15 points of them.
Dukes' inside play assisted the Wildcats to 36 points in the paint and 39 rebounds, compared to the Terriers' 22 and 31.
The first half was a battle between Dukes and Morris as both kept their team's offenses going. Dukes started out scoring 10 of the 'Cats' first 17 points and later netted four straight to give Davidson a 30-23 lead. She finished with 16 for the half.
Morris, in her final home game, kept Wofford within striking distance by matching Dukes' point total for the half. She swished home five of the Terriers' last nine points in the period as they used an 11-5 run to get within one at the break 35-34.
GAME NOTES: Davidson won its sixth straight in the all-time series vs. Wofford and 24th in the past 26 meetings … The Wildcats improved to 44-14 since 2011-12 in SoCon games … Murray has scored in double digits in 28 of the 'Cats' 29 games this year, pushing her career total to 95 … Savage is 8-1 all-time vs. Wofford … the Wildcats swept the season-series vs. Wofford, its fourth SoCon sweep of the year.
