DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson outscored San Diego State 7-2 in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome a six-goal halftime deficit as the Wildcats fell 11-10 Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium in both team's season openers for women's lacrosse.

The Wildcats (0-1) had a chance to tie it up when they got the draw control with 2:37 left, but a missed give-and-go from Emily Rademacher to Erin Doherty in the circle with 1:13 remaining gave the ball back to the Aztecs, who ran the clock out for the win.

Doherty had brought Davidson to within one (11-10) on her free-position goal with 2:39 left.

Rademacher finished with four points on the afternoon, getting a hat trick and dishing out one assist to go with two caused turnovers and four groundballs. Doherty had two goals on four shots.

Mary Leonard matched Rademacher with three of her own goals, while Emily Cooke had a goal and two assists. Emma Sissman pulled in a career-best eight draw controls.

San Diego State was led by Andrea Killebrew's and Bailey Ewing's two goals each. Seven other Aztecs had single goals. Goalie Katrina Reeves had seven groundballs and four saves, while Grace Korandovich was one of five SDSU players with multiple caused turnovers, getting three of them.

Ewing started things off quickly for the Aztecs, scoring less than a minute into the game off a free-position shot. SDSU would then score six of the next seven goals, including five straight from 24:20 to the 13:55 mark in the first half.

Leonard added her first two goals of the season shortly after, but Davidson headed to halftime down 9-3.

The Wildcats picked up the pace in the second half, rattling off three straight goals to make it 9-6 after an Ann Fucigna goal off a Cooke pass with 18:09 on the clock.

Rademacher would make it a three-goal deficit later at 10-7 with her second score of the game, but three minutes later, Felice Artuso netted the game-winner with 8:16 left on the clock.

Davidson's last push saw Fucigna hook up with Leonard for an 11-8 score and then two minutes later with 5:47 to go, Rademacher hit a free-postion goal to make it 11-9.

SDSU had a two-shot advantage at 23-21 for the game, while it picked up 28 groundballs compared to Davidson's 16. The Wildcats finished with a 14-9 edge on draw controls.

Katy Boyle, making her first collegiate start in goal for the 'Cats, stopped a career-best 10 shots.

Davidson hits the road for a four-game swing, starting Feb. 23 at No. 18 Navy. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
