FAIRFAX, Va. – Kelly Friers hit a career-high 15 kills to help lead the Davidson volleyball team past George Mason, 3-1, Friday evening. The victory came by set scores of 25-16, 11-25, 25-18 and 25-18.
"The match was a great reflection of the team's determination and work ethic," said head coach Chris Willis. "At 3-18, this team could have given up on the season, but they trained hard all week and got the pay off. I am very proud of their character tonight."
Friers turned in a .481 hitting percentage, six digs and two blocks to go along with her match-high 15 kills to pace the Davidson (4-18, 2-10 A-10) offense.
Mary Harriet Moore contributed eight kills, a. 500 hitting percentage and two blocks with Emily Franklin turning in seven kills, a .462 hitting percentage and four blocks. Hannah Rau totaled eight kills, while Sarah Fink added eight kills and two blocks. Mikayla Derochie had 27 assists, while Morgan Shannon posted 16 digs as the Davidson defense limited George Mason to a .139 clip.
Jessie Greenslade led George Mason (6-18, 2-9 A-10) with 14 kills, while Morghan Martin turned in nine kills and eight digs.
After an impressive showing from both sides to go back and forth to open the first set, things were deadlocked at 12-12 before Mason made its run. After Mary Harriet Moore brought the Wildcats within one at 15-14, the Patriots rattled off a 10-2 run to close out the set with steam.
But Davidson flipped the script in the second stanza again after an even start to things off. The Patriots kept it interesting, getting within 10-7, but the Wildcat attack was too powerful with the likes of Michelle McNeight and Hannah Rau on service runs. Davidson took care of nine of the last 10 points in the set to even the ledger at 1-1 heading into the third.
Davidson opened the third set with an 8-0 spurt on a lengthy Rau service run that featured a flurry of Frier finishes. Though the Patriots threatened, the Wildcats kept the momentum going to take the third frame 25-18, thanks in part to a .323 hitting percentage. Friers contributed five kills in the frame with Rau chipping in three.
The two squads traded blows to start the fourth, as a kill from Friers kept things even at 6-6 in the early going. Trailing 10-8, Davidson took charge with a 9-2 run that featured three Fries kills and a Rau ace to move the 'Cats to 17-12 before Friers registered match point 25-18 to give Davidson the win.
Davidson returns to the court tomorrow with a 7 p.m. match against George Washington.
