Davidson Tripped Up at George Washington, 3-0

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Davidson volleyball team suffered an Atlantic 10 conference setback Saturday night, falling to George Washington in straight sets at the Smith Center. The defeat came by set scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-18.
Emily Franklin and Kelly Friers each turned in six kills to pace the Davidson (4-19, 2-11 A-10) offense. Franklin hit .417 to go along with two blocks, while Friers turned in a .267 hitting percentage and a block. Sarah Fink and Rachel Earnhardt notched five kills apiece. Mikayla Derochie registered 13 assists. Defensively, Mary Harriet Moore totaled four blocks, while Anastasia Owen had nine kills.
Kelsey Newman had match-high 17 kills while Chidima Osuchukwu and Aaliya Davidson had nine and eight kills respectively to pace George Washington (19-7, 9-3 A-10).
After George Washington jumped out to an early 3-1 lead to open the first set, the Wildcats bounced back to cut the lead 13-10 thanks to a Franklin kill and an ace from Derochie. Though the Wildcats kept things close, the Colonials registered the last four points to secure the set, 25-18.
GWU maintained momentum in the second set, as the Colonials opened the frame with a 6-2 run, before kills from Friers and Earnhardt helped Davidson to cut the deficit, 13-10. Though the Wildcats threatened, the Colonials closed things out in the game to win it, 25-21.
It was all George Washington in the third as the home team opened a 20-8 advantage. Davidson used a 7-3 run to make a game of it towards the end, fending off match point three times before a kill from Newman ended the comeback bid and gave George Washington its third set win at 25-18.
Davidson returns to the court next weekend with a trip to VCU.
