Davidson Loses to Saint Louis in Straight Sets

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to Saint Louis Friday evening at Belk Arena. The defeat came by set scores of 25-16, 25-14 and 25-15.
Junior Hannah Rau registered a team-high seven kills for Davidson (3-17, 1-9 A-10) while adding nine digs and a block. Freshman Sarah Fink contributed six kills while hitting at a .462 clip, as Kelly Friers registered four kills. Defensively, Mikayla Derochie chipped in five digs with Morgan Shannon totaling four. Emily Franklin and Mary Harriet Moore led the charge at the net with two blocks apiece.
Saint Louis (18-7, 7-3 A-10) was paced by Lauren Leverenz's 12 kills and two blocks, while Danielle Rygelski, Nenye Okoro and Megan Gilbert tallied eight kills each. The Billikens hit .410 on the evening as Davidson was limited to a .043 percentage.
The teams found themselves tied at eight early in the opening set, but a 7-2 stretch allowed Saint Louis to open a 15-10 advantage, en route to a 25-16 set victory. Derochie had six helpers in the set while Fink had two kills on four attempts.
The second set followed a similar storyline as the visitors open a 10-6 advantage. Davidson was unable to hold on as Saint Louis tallied 10 of the final 14 points to secure the second set, 25-14.
The Billikens wasted no time in the third set as they jumped out to a 14-7 lead. Davidson would not go down without a fight as it scored twice in the waning moments before Saint Louis pulled away for match point, 25-15.
Davidson returns to the court Sunday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. to take on Dayton in its final home match of the 2014 season. The Wildcats will honor their three graduating seniors prior to the first serve.
