DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team stayed with first-place Dayton for three sets, but that was all the Flyers needed as they swept the Wildcats, 25-17, 25-20 and 25-18.
Seniors Anastasia Owen, Sarah Roberts and Rachel Earnhardt were all honored prior to the match for their contributions to the volleyball program.
Kelly Friers paced Davidson (3-18, 1-10 A-10) with six kills on the day, addin four total blocks. Sarah Fink, Mary Harriet Moore and Rachel Earnhardt each added four kills apiece, while Katriana Romanelli dished out 11 assists. Dayton's (23-5, 10-1 A-10) Alaina Turner led all players with 14 kills, while Jane Emmenecker had 34 assists.
The two sides battled back and forth in the opening set, as things were eventually tied 10-10. After a 6-1 Dayton run, the Flyers used another flurry of kills to get to a 23-15 advantage, before the Wildcats attempted a comeback. A Kelly Friers kill and an attack error brought Davidson within 23-17, but Dayton grabbed the final two points in the set to win 25-17.
More of the same dueling ensued through the start of the second frame, with things being tied 12-12 and 14-14 after Sarah Fink and a Dayton error gave Davidson some momentum. A short run by the Flyers looked to end the set quickly, but a Sarah Roberts service run moved the 'Cats within 23-20. But the Flyers took off from there, winning the last two points to take the second set, 25-20.
A 9-3 Dayton run to start the third set gave the Flyers all the firepower they needed. Lengthy service runs eventually put Dayton up 21-9 in the final stanza, but Davidson made a game of it towards the end. On the serve of Rachel Earnhardt, the 'Cats clawed their way back to down just four at 23-17. But finishers from Alaina Turner and Jessica Sloan ended the comeback bid and gave Dayton its third set win at 25-18.
Davidson will travel to George Mason, Nov. 7 before heading to George Washington Nov. 8.
