BLACKSBURG, Va. – Davidson wrapped up the non-conference portion of its campaign with a 0-0 (2OT) draw against Virginia Tech in men's soccer action Tuesday evening at Thompson Field.
In addition to road wins at Virginia and Duke earlier this season, the Wildcats finished 2-0-1 against one of the nation's premiere conferences, while moving to 7-2-4 overall.
"I don't think it is wild or greedy to expect to win that game. Regardless who it is - including an ACC team on the road - this team has proven they can get the job done," commented head coach Matt Spear. "With that said, shutting out an athletic, physical talented team is a worthy defensive achievement. The team's work rate was amazing, and that is led by our center backs and center mids. And a solid clean shot for Matt Pacifici in goal."
Davidson, which finished with a 15-13 edge in shots, outshot the Hokies 7-2 in the extra sessions, including attempts by forwards Valeriy Sviderskiy and Maxi Pragnell that caromed off the post in the 94th and 104th minutes, respectively.
"In overtime, we were fortunate not to get scored on because they hit a pair of shots off of the post," said Virginia Tech head coach Mike Brizendine. "That was a good Davidson side and that was a good result for us."
Alan Reiter, who scored the Wildcats' game-winners in their previous contests against ACC foes, led the way with a game-high five shots. The midfielder also provided Davidson's best chance in the first half, a free kick that hit the cross bar.
"On the offensive end, I really felt a goal was going to happen. Hitting the post three times is unfortunate; just a bit more precision needed to get the victory," said Coach Spear.
Virginia Tech (7-6-2) held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks, while both keepers recorded four saves.
Davidson will continue its stretch of three games in six days when Duquesne visits Alumni Stadium Friday for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.
"The team is very hungry and cohesive; which is crucial late in seasons. It's a wonderful group to work with and I am equally proud as a coach and as an alumnus."
