DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey team kept Saint Francis in check for the first 35 minutes Friday, but it wasn't enough as the Red Flash used an offensive surge in the second half to pull away and win 3-0 at Belk Turf Field.
Seniors Madeline Herder, Kaity Anstrom and Kristy Helscel were all honored prior to the game for their contributions to the field hockey program.
A strong defensive effort and two key saves from junior goaltender Emily Leytham in the first 35 minutes of the contest kept the Wildcats (2-15, 1-5 A-10) within striking distance of the Red Flash (12-2, 5-2 A-10).
Selena Adamshick opened the scoring for Saint Francis four minutes into the second stanza, redirecting a shot off a penalty corner.
Less than five minutes later it looked like the Wildcats were going to have an opportunity to even the score. Hannah Fisher flicked a pass to Melissa Funsten, who carried the ball into the arc, and launched a shot wide as she fell to the ground.
After keeping Saint Francis at bay for over 20 minutes following the initial goal, the Red Flash broke through and netted three goals in a seven-minute span as Autumn Pellman scored two goals.
Leytham made seven saves in the cage for the Wildcats.
Davidson returns to action Oct. 31 against VCU.
