DAVIDSON, N.C. – Freshman Hannah Fisher notched the game winner in overtime, to give Davidson field hockey a thrilling 1-0 win over VCU in its final home game of the regular season. With the win, Davidson improves to 3-15 overall and a 2-5 record in Atlantic 10 play.
Much of the opening stanza was played in the Wildcat's offensive territory, as Davidson racked up seven shots, but could not find the back of the net. Katherine English, Melissa Funsten and Anna Davis each had multiple attacks at the net, but a combination of saves by VCU goalkeeper Kendall Clifton and near misses kept it a scoreless contest.
The two teams spend most of the second stanza in an up-and-down the field battle. The Rams earned its fair share of opportunities, but the Davidson defense and backstop junior Emily Leytham kept things quiet. As time was wining down, VCU had a great look to take the game, but Leytham's quick foot hindered any chance as the senior kicked away a Kaylee Maunz shot with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.
VCU put the pressure on in the first overtime, firing off four shots, including two on target, but Leytham stood tall to help force a second overtime.
Fisher won it for the Wildcats with just nine minutes remaining on the clock in the second overtime. After getting a nice pass from Funsten, Fisher pulled Clifton out of position and launched a shot to the right just past the Rams' netminder for the score.
It's Fisher's second goal of the season for the Wildcats. Leytham recorded seven saves in the shutout effort, the second of the season for Davidson.
The Wildcats hit the road for their final regular season game at Richmond Sunday, Nov. 2.
