Moniz-Soares Wins Singles Title at Wake Forest Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Brites Moniz-Soares led the Davidson women's tennis team at the Wake Forest Invitational by winning her first Fall singles title by taking home the "A" Singles draw, while two other 'Cats reached the semifinals over the weekend.
Moniz-Soares, who won a singles title last year at the Davidson Invite II, opened the weekend with a three-set thrilling win over cross-county rival Charlotte, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. She followed up by scoring a 6-4, 6-0 triumph vs. host Wake Forest and then a 6-4, 6-1 victory in the semis vs. Elon. The senior's weekend was finished off with a 6-4, 6-4 title-winning match vs. Karolina Chemaya of Campbell.
In the "B" Singles draw, Elaina Cummer had the best showing. The sophomore opened with 7-6, 6-3 triumph vs. Maryland and then reached the semis on the strength of a 6-4, 7-5 triumph vs. host Wake Forest. She dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to Courtney Earnest of BSU there and closed fourth overall.
Nisha Crouser also competed in the draw, falling in her first match. She closed out weekend on a winning note with a 6-3, 7-6 (1) victory vs. UNCG.
Sarah Stein, playing in her third career Fall event, fell 6-2, 6-1 to host Wake Forest in her first match of the weekend in the "C" Singles draw. But, she reached the semis on the consolation side, winning 6-2, 6-4 and 6-4, 6-4 in two straight matches vs. Richmond and ASU.
Fellow newcomer Jenna Brunner was the other Wildcat to reach the semis in the winners bracket of the "D" Singles draw. She opened with 7-5, 6-1 triumph vs. Campbell and then reached the semis with a 6-3, 7-5 victory vs. Toni Ormond of BSU. Brunner's weekend ended there with a three-set defeat to UNCG's Amy Ellis, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. She finished fourth overall, falling in a third place game, 6-0, 6-2 to Winthrop.
Elise Held and Courtney McCray each played singles in the "E" and "F" draws. Held had the best showing, coming back from a 6-1, 6-2 defeat to earn a 6-3, 6-4 victory against UNCG to close out the weekend.
Held and Brunner had the best showing in doubles action, competing in the "C" Doubles draw. The duo had a bye in the first round and then netted an 8-6 victory vs. a pair from Richmond. The weekend was halted in the semifinals with an 8-6 defeat to Elon.
Moniz-Soares and Cummer were the Wildcats' No. 1 doubles team in the "A" draw and earned one win, an 8-2 triumph vs. ASU.
In the "B" Doubles draw, Crouser/Stein lost a close one, 8-7, falling in a tie breaker, 7-2, then lost 8-1, before bouncing back with an 8-4 win against Charlotte to finish weekend.
Davidson takes some time off before close out its Fall season with the Charlotte Invitational, Oct. 25-26.
