DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team got its Fall season underway by playing at home as the Wildcats opened with the Jeff Frank Invitational Saturday at the Covington Tennis Courts.
The two-day flighted tournament includes UNC Asheville, Elon and USC Upstate with a few players from Winthrop, taking place Saturday and Sunday. The invitational is named after the great former head coach Jeff Frank, who coached the Wildcats for 34 years and is the school's all-time winningest coach in any sport with 541 victories.
Day one saw five Wildcats collect at least one singles win with newcomer Zack Zapatero picking up a pair of wins in his Fall debut. The freshman earned a 6-2, 7-6 (3) straight-set win against UNC Asheville, just one of three Wildcats to earn wins against the Bulldogs. He then scored a nice 6-3, 6-3 triumph against the Spartans of USC Upstate.
Also winning against the Spartans was sophomore Evan Watkins, who in his first career event scored a 7-5, 6-4 victory at No. 7 singles.
Playing No. 1 singles, Robert Lightbourn went 1-1 on the first day, going to a third set super tie-breaker in both matches. The senior split his first two sets, 6-0, 3-6, vs. UNCA, and then scored a 10-7 super tie-breaker win to earn his first victory of the Fall. Lightbourn forced another super tie-breaker after earning a 6-3 second-set win vs. USC Upstate. He was unable to keep the winning ways going, falling 10-6 in the super tie-breaker.
Lightbourn did score a doubles win with Ricky Saad at No. 2 doubles vs. the Spartans, taking an 8-3 decision.
Saad had earlier dropped his first collegiate Fall match, losing a close super tie-breaker at No. 4 singles to USCU, 11-9. He had split his first two matches, 4-6, 6-4.
Also playing in his first collegiate Fall match was Jordan Hart. The freshman went 1-1 in his two matches (7-6, 6-2 vs. UNCA & 1-6, 2-6 vs. USC Upstate) at No. 6 singles. He teamed with Watkins at No. 3 doubles and fell 8-4 to the Spartans.
Ted Bolton had a strong 7-5, 7-6 triumph vs. his Winthrop opponent in singles action.
Also competing on the first day was Ethan Kallick and Alex Howard, who each dropped straight set matches to both the Bulldogs and the Spartans.
Davidson wraps up its own invitational tomorrow with events going all day.
