Six Wildcats Compete at CofC Invite Over Weekend

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson played in its second Fall event over the weekend, taking part in the College of Charleston Invitational.
Six 'Cats took part in the invite, with five of them scoring at least one win. Laina Cummer netted a pair of wins to pace the team. She opened with a 6-4, 5-7, 10-3 victory in the first round of the A1 Singles to reach the round of 16. From there she netted a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over host CofC to move onto the round of eight. The sophomore's weekend ended one match short of the finals with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat.
Senior Brites Moniz-Soares also took part in the A1 Singles, falling in her first match 6-3, 6-2, but she came back for a solid 6-0, 6-2 decision over Stetson.
Competing in the A2 Singles was senior Nisha Crouser, who dropped her first match of the weekend. She came back to score a 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 win over SoCon-foe Samford.
Courtney McCray, Sarah Stein and Elise Held each took part in the B1 Singles bracket. McCray reached the round of eight when she netted a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Sarah Gail of Samford. The sophomore saw her run end with a 6-1, 6-1 lost to host CofC.
Stein regrouped from a first match 6-3, 6-2 defeat to score a 7-6, 6-3 win over Stetson.
In doubles action, Moniz-Soares and Cummer represented Davidson at the No. 1 doubles spot. They scored a 6-0, 6-2 win over Stetson. Crouser and Stein played in the B1 doubles bracket, falling 8-5.
Davidson turns around and will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., for their third Fall event at the Wake Forest Invitational, Sept. 27-29.
