DAVIDSON, N.C. – Former Duke catcher Ryan Munger has joined the Davidson baseball coaching staff, head coach Dick Cooke announced Thursday.
Munger, a four-year letterwinner and two-year team captain for the Blue Devils before graduating this past spring, will serve as the Wildcats' volunteer assistant coach.
"We're excited to have Ryan join our staff as he has a great baseball background, has a passion for the game and is highly motivated to make this his chosen career," said Cooke. "We look forward to the positive impact he'll have as he shares his experiences from having played in an academically challenging environment."
Munger started 58 of 92 games played during his career at Duke, making a career-high 19 starts as a senior and earning a place on the ACC Academic Honor Roll playing for head coach Chris Pollard, a 1996 Davidson baseball graduate.
"Personally and professionally, I am thrilled for both Ryan Munger and Davidson College," said Pollard. "Ryan has an incredible opportunity to work with (...and learn from) one of the most respected coaches in the college game: Dick Cooke. On a personal level, to have a former Duke captain working for my college coach and mentor is an absolute honor. Davidson is getting a young, rising star in the coaching profession; Ryan has a tremendous baseball pedigree, outstanding people skills, and a unique understanding of the challenges that a Davidson athlete faces when balancing athletics and academics. He will bring a lot of energy to the Davidson program, and will benefit from this experience."
Munger has gained coaching experience working numerous camps. He began coaching various age levels at Duke baseball camps as a freshman, and has worked at several high school prospect camps. He also has coached at camps at Wake Forest, North Carolina and Davidson.
A native of Houston, Texas, Munger graduated from Duke in 2012 with a degree in history. His great uncle, George Munger, pitched 10 years in the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates, winning a game in the 1946 World Series to help the Cardinals win the title.
