If Lantz finishes in the Top 24 Thursday, he will compete again Friday at 7:15 p.m. The Top 12 finishers out of the East and West regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
Lantz and Pagonis qualified by running times in their respective events that ranked in the Top 48 of declared runners in the East Region. This marks the first time in program history that Davidson has sent two runners to the regional meet strictly on time, as Ryan Hopkins '12 was the first last season. Davidson had previously sent competitors who had received automatic bids for winning individual SoCon Championships, but the NCAA no longer issues automatic berths.
Pagonis and Lantz combined for four individual championships at the Southern Conference Championships in April, as Lantz won both the 800- and 1500-meter runs, while Pagonis swept the 5000- and 10,000-meter runs.
Pagonis is the highest ranked of the Davidson duo, as his season best and school record time in the 10,000m of 29 minutes, 32.58 seconds ranks 21st of the declared runners in the event. Lantz slipped into the Top 48 with his season best and school record time of 1:50.03 in the 800m, which ranks 46th amongst declared East region runners.
Both rank among the best ever at Davidson. With three individual outdoor SoCon titles, Lantz leads all Wildcats since 1990. In addition to holding the school records in both the 800m and 1500m (3:47.58), he also owns nine of the top-10 performances in Davidson history the 800m and seven of the top-10 in the 1500m. Pagonis appears four times each on both the school 5000m and 10,000m performance lists in addition to holding the records in both, and only Douglas Noreen '07 holds two SoCon titles (since 1990) like Pagonis.
Davidson is guided by head coach Gary Andrew, who is in his 26th season leading the 'Cats.
