DAVIDSON, N.C. – Two days after setting the program's all-time goals mark, junior Ann Fucigna tied Davidson's single-game goal record with a career-high eight and the Wildcats cruised to their fifth win a row by downing Presbyterian 19-3 on Senior Day at Richardson Stadium in women's lacrosse Sunday afternoon.
The junior attacker matched Lauren Kenchington's record of eight goals set back in 2000 vs. Ohio. Fucigna, who broke the all-time goals mark with her 135th career score on Friday night vs. Campbell, pushed her season total to 43. She scored five of her eight goals in the second half and now has 18 of her goals in Big South play.
For the second game in a row, Davidson (7-5, 4-0 Big South) dominated. It used a 7-0 run in the first half to grab an early 7-1 lead. Freshman Emma Sissman had her hand in three of the goals, scoring twice and assisting on another.
The Wildcats then pushed the advantage out to double-digits when Fucigna opened the second half with a pair of goals and Alanna Parker scored with 17:38 to make it 13-2. They closed on a 6-0 run with Liz Edwards tacking on her second goal of the year for an 18-3 lead and Fucigna capping off another big scoring day for Davidson with her eighth and final score, an empty netter.
The Wildcats fired off a season-high 40 shots, picked up 25 groundballs and 18 draw controls (both season bests), while forcing nine of Presbyterian's 21 turnovers.
Parker (3 groundballs, 3 draw controls) scored four goals and was one of six Wildcats to be honored prior to the game as part of Senior Day. Fellow classmate Lindsay Cooper added a pair of scores to go with two groundballs and two draw controls.
Senior defenders Abigail Doelger, Erin McGuire, Morgan Tarrant and Jessica Melby all had a hand in holding Davidson's opponent to three goals for the second straight game. Doelger forced three turnovers and picked up three groundballs.
McGuire had two groundballs and a forced turnover, while Tarrant, who made her first career start, added a pair of groundballs.
Melby was her usual self in goal, picking up eight saves to give her 80 on the year. She lowered her goals against average down to a career-best 8.12, which is currently tops in a Wildcat single-season.
Presbyterian (2-12, 0-4 Big South) was led by Catherine Ellis' two goals, while Jaime Bemish had two assists.
Emily Cooke finished with five more points for the Wildcats on a goal and four assists. The sophomore, who Friday set the Wildcat single-season assist record, has 35 on the year and paces the team with 58 points (23 goals).
Jean Atkinson, Mary Leonard, Paige Logan and Emily Rademacher each chipped in an assist.
Davidson wraps up its second three-game homestand of the year with a 6 p.m. contest against rival High Point in a key Big South matchup. Both teams are undefeated in league play.
