ELON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team saw their 2013 season come to an end with a 4-1 setback to the Samford Bulldogs in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament Friday mid-morning at the Burlington Tennis Center.
Davidson concluded a successful season with a 12-9 record, the most wins its had since winning 14 during the 2008 campaign. Second-seeded Samford (13-9) moves onto the semifinals with the win.
Due to heavy rain expected in the area, the match started out with singles play first and the Bulldogs took four of the five singles matches that were completed. The Wildcats did not go down without a fight though, forcing a pair of three-set matches.
Junior Connor Evins scored the lone Wildcat team point by winning one of the three-set matches. He netted his 11th victory of the season with a 0-6, 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles, finishing 9-7 at that position and 11-7 overall.
The No. 2 singles match between Nicky Kunz and Elliot Barnwell was the other three-setter. Kunz took the first the first set 6-2, but then dropped 6-0 and 7-6 decisions in the next two to suffer the defeat. Kunz lost the tie-breaker 10-8, in the third set.
Robert Lightbourn pushed his second set to a tie-breaker, but fell 9-7 in dropping a 6-1, 7-6 decision at No. 4.
Playing their final collegiate matches were Joe Schafer and Chris Mark. Schafer's match went unfinished as he forced a third set by winning the second one 6-4. He had lost a tie-breaker, 7-4, in the first set. The senior closed out his Wildcat career with four straight 10-win campaigns and earned 43 career singles wins, while adding another 43 victories in doubles action.
Mark ended his final match as a Wildcat with a 6-1, 6-2 setback at No. 3 singles to close the year at 8-10. He netted 35 career singles wins and picked up another 42 victories in doubles play.
