ELON, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team saw their season come to an end in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament with a 4-1 defeat to eighth-seeded Samford Thursday morning at the Burlington Tennis Center.
Davidson closed out its 2013 season with a 9-12 record. The Bulldogs (9-14) will advance to play top-seeded College of Charleston Friday morning in the quarterfinals.
The Wildcats started the match by dropping the doubles point with a pair of 8-3 defeats at No. 1 and 3 doubles. The No. 2 team of Stephani Synn and Nisha Crouser trailed 5-4 before the point had been decided.
Brites Moniz-Soares scored Davidson's lone point on the morning. She rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles to conclude her season with a 7-10 mark. All seven wins came at the top singles slot.
Senior Stephani Synn played her final match as a Wildcat at No. 3 singles. The senior dropped her first set, 6-0, and was down 5-2, before the match was determined. Synn ended her career with 25 career singles wins.
Samford earned singles wins at No. 2, 5 and 6 to seal up the team win. SoCon All-Freshman team member Elaina Cummer, Catherine Wood and Elise Held each dropped 6-2, 6-1 matches at their respective positions. It was Wood's final collegiate match as she finished 3-9 on the season.
