ELON, N.C. — For the second time in the past three years, the Davidson men's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Wofford by the score of 4-1 Thursday afternoon at the Southern Conference Tournament at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Davidson (12-8) defeated the Terriers (3-15) in the first round of the tournament in 2011. The 'Cats will play second-seeded Samford (12-9) tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the right to move onto the semifinals.
Down 1-0 after doubles play, the Wildcats took care of busy in singles action as they won four of the six positions to secure the team win.
The match started out with a battle in doubles action, going all the way down to the No. 3 position. The 'Cats' Joe Schafer and Ethan Kallick tied things up with an 8-3 victory at No. 2 after the Terriers took an 8-5 decision at No. 1, setting up final doubles match.
Schafer and Kallick moved to 8-6 on the season, with six of those wins coming at the No. 2 slot.
Tied at 8-8, Robert Lightbourn and Nicky Kunz went down to the wire against Tom Wood and Jackson Keith in a tie-breaker at No. 3. The duo were unable to pull through as Wofford took it 12-10 to earn the match's first team point.
Davidson charged back to grab a 2-1 lead with singles wins from senior Chris Mark and freshman Alex Howard at No. 3 and 4 positions, respectively. Mark won his eighth singles match of the season with a solid 6-2, 6-2 straight-set win over Keith and Howard finished shortly thereafter with an impressive 6-2, 6-1 victory for his fifth singles win.
Connor Evins secured the 'Cats' third point with a comeback win in the second set. The junior earned a 6-4 win in the first set, then came back from one game down to win a tie-breaker (7-3) to seal up the second-set victory at No. 5 singles. Evins hit the 10-win plateau for the second straight season, giving him 20 victories for his career.
Senior Schafer finished off the win with a three-set victory at No. 1. He started his match off against Rob Galloway with a 6-0 shutout win in set one, but then fell 6-1 in the second set to force the final set. Schafer broke free after a close first few games to earn a 6-3 victory; his team-leading 11th singles win of the year.
