DAVIDSON, N.C. — Freshman Elaina Cummer became the first Davidson Wildcat to earn a spot on the Southern Conference All-Freshman Team as the league announced the all-league first and second teams, and top player honors today for women's tennis.
Davidson has had at least one player earn an all-conference award in 10 of the past 11 years dating back to 2002. Cummer becomes the first player to earn a spot on the all-freshman team since it was first awarded in 2009 and she is the 13th Wildcat overall since 2002 to earn an all-conference honor.
The freshman was Davidson's main No. 2 singles player during the season, collecting a 7-13 record. Cummer had four of those wins at the No. 2 spot and played 16 of her 20 total matches there. She was 3-1 at the No. 1 spot, rattling off a three-match win streak in late February at the top position.
College of Charleston had the league's top player in Christin Newman and the coach of the year in Angelo Anastopoulo. Clare Cox was awarded the SoCon Freshman of the Year from Appalachian State and Samford's Michele Stanford was honored with the Sportsmanship Award.
Davidson takes its 9-11 team record into the SoCon Tournament this Thursday, April 18 when it opens up against eighth-seeded Samford at 9 a.m. in Elon, N.C. The Wildcats are seeded ninth for the tournament and seek their first win in the tournament since defeating Georgia Southern 4-1 in 2009.
