DAVIDSON, N.C. — After strong finishes to their final seasons as a Wildcat, Davidson's senior trio of Joe Schafer, Chris Mark and Kevin Moore were each honored by the Southern Conference today as the league announced its all-league first and second teams, and its top player awards in men's tennis.
Schafer was honored with the league's Don Bunch/Buddy Hartsell Sportsmanship Award, while the doubles team of Mark and Moore were named to the All-SoCon Second Team at No. 1 doubles.
It's the third time Schafer has earned a postseason conference honor after being named to the league's all-freshman team and first-team doubles in 2010, followed by a spot on the All-SoCon Second Team at No. 1 singles in 2011.
The senior hit the 10-win plateau for the fourth straight season, going a team-best 10-8 in singles. He scored nine of those wins at the No. 2 position and went an even 5-5 in SoCon matches. Schafer had a personal-high tying five-match win streak and a three-match win streak during the season.
Schafer was also a key part of Davidson's doubles teams, partnering up with Ethan Kallick at No. 2 to go 5-3 there and 7-6 overall. The duo also went 5-5 in league matches.
The senior has 42 career victories in singles, 17 of them in SoCon play, while going 42-33 in doubles action.
Mark and Moore formed the Wildcats' No. 1 doubles team, going 9-9 overall, including 8-5 at the top spot. The duo rattled off a team-best five-match win streak after a season-opening defeat to No. 60 Clemson. The pair also played singles, with Mark splitting time between the No. 3 and 4 positions. The senior went 7-9 overall, 5-5 vs. the SoCon, and had a 4-2 record at the No. 4 spot.
Moore got into four singles matches, going 1-3 overall, all against SoCon opponents.
Mark has collected 34 career singles wins to go with 42 doubles victories, while Moore has won 10 singles matches during his career and added 26 in doubles play.
Elon's Cameron Silverman was the SoCon Player of the Year, while Michael Leonard earned coach of the year for the Phoenix. Rayane Djouad of Georgia Southern was named the league's top freshman.
Davidson (11-8), the seventh seed for the upcoming SoCon Tournament this Thursday, April 18, in Elon, N.C., opens up the first round against tenth-seeded Wofford. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
