CHARLESTON, S.C. — Chris Mark won both his singles and doubles matches, and the Davidson men's tennis team started off its trip to Charleston, S.C., with a 5-2 triumph over The Citadel in men's Southern Conference tennis action Friday afternoon.

The Wildcats moved to 2-0 in league play and 8-3 overall, the best start since 2010. They also moved to 19-4 all-time against the Bulldogs, who fell to 5-4, 0-3 in the SoCon.

Mark helped the 'Cats start the match off by capturing the doubles point. He teamed with Kevin Moore as the duo netted their team-best sixth win together with an 8-4 victory. Nicky Kunz and Robert Lightbourn picked up the other doubles win with an 8-1 decision at No. 3.

The senior then joined fellow classmate Joe Schafer along with Connor Evins and Alex Howard in earning singles wins to seal up the team victory. Mark won his second straight to even his singles record to 4-4, picking up a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4.

Schafer continued his strong play, winning for the seventh time in the past 10 matches after a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 2. The senior moved to 7-3 on the campaign.

Evins and Howard collected their fifth and fourth wins, respectively, with a pair of three-set triumphs. Evins dropped the first set, 6-4, but roared back for a 6-0 victory in set two and then took a tie-breaker win, 7-3, in the final set for the 7-6 victory.

The freshman Howard split his first two sets, 6-3, 3-6 and went the distances in the final set. He pulled through with a 7-4 tie-breaker win.

The Wildcats stay in Charleston and will take on College of Charleston Sunday, March 10 at 1 p.m.
