DAVIDSON, N.C. — Senior Joe Schafer earned his second career SoCon Player of the Week honor after leading the Wildcats to a pair of wins for matches played March 4-10, as announced by the league office today.
Schafer went 5-1 in singles and doubles play last week to guide the Wildcats to a 2-1 record in league play. The Wildcats earned wins over Chattanooga (5-2) and The Citadel (5-2), before falling to the College of Charleston (4-3) last Sunday.
Schafer clinched the match point against UTC with a dramatic three-set victory over Manuel Barroetavena at No. 2 singles (4-6, 6-2, 6-3). His other two singles wins during the week came in straight sets as he topped The Citadel's Dillon Berkabile 6-1, 6-3 and College of Charleston's Sebastian Lopez 6-1, 7-5.
He is riding a three-match win streak in singles play, two off his season-best he had from Feb. 2-Feb. 20.
The senior paired up with Ethan Kallick at No. 1 doubles for Davidson, and the Wildcats' top tandem went 2-1 last week. Schafer and Kallick edged UTC's Chris Smith and Roberto Vieira (9-8) before falling to The Citadel's David Orces and Oliver Dedding (8-3). Schafer and Kallick closed the week with an 8-6 victory over CofC's Brice Allanic and Charlie Ghriskey.
Schafer has a team-best record of 8-3 in singles play, including a 3-0 mark in SoCon action. Schafer and Kallick are 4-2 at No. 1 doubles for the Wildcats.
Davidson (8-4, 2-1 SoCon) returns to the courts Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Elon (5-4, 1-0 SoCon).
