DAVIDSON, N.C. – Western Carolina used a pair of home runs and strong pitching to earn a 5-2 win over Davidson in Southern Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field.
Third baseman Tyler White, who finished the day going 3-for-4 with a walk, hit a two-run home run to left field in the first inning for an early 2-0 lead for Western Carolina (9-7, 2-1 SoCon). Shortstop Michael Zeblo hit a sacrifice fly to the warning track in the second inning to halve the lead in the bottom of the second inning, driving in designated hitter Lee Miller (1-for-4), but the Catamounts added three more runs throughout the rest of the game. A solo home run in the ninth inning by first baseman Andrew Barna, who led Davidson (6-7, 2-4 SoCon) at the plate going 2-for-3 with a walk, was the Wildcats' final score.
LHP Morgan McKinney (1-1) held the Wildcats to three hits and two walks, surrendering just one run while striking out six in six innings of work. RHP Tyler Powell allowed just one hit in two innings of work, and RHP Preston Hatcher only surrendered Barna's homer.
After the second inning, neither team scored until designated hitter Luke Gragg (2-for4) drove in a run from second base with a soft single to centerfield in the sixth inning. First baseman Austin Neary (2-for-5) roped an RBI-single with two outs for a 4-1 lead and centerfielder Cody Jones (2-for-5) added an insurance run in the ninth inning with solo home run to right-center field.
LHP Rob Bain (0-1) was charged with the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings with two strikeouts.
Davidson will next travel to Columbia, S.C. to face No. 6 South Carolina Wednesday at 7 p.m.
