Chattanooga Snaps Davidson’s Road Win Streak, 68-59

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – In a battle of first and second place teams in the Southern Conference, Chattanooga got the better of the Wildcats as Davidson was unable to off-set the Mocs' 51.9 percent shooting in the second half and saw its record eight-game road win streak halted with a 68-59 defeat Monday evening in McKenzie Arena.
Chattanooga's (25-3, 18-1 SoCon) win was its 26th straight at home and 15th overall as it captured the regular season title by sweeping the second-place Wildcats.
Davidson, playing its fifth game in a 10-day stretch, had its four-game overall win streak come to an end as it fell to 18-10 overall and 15-3 in league play. The Wildcats were hoping to repeat as regular season champs after capturing the program's first title a year ago.
Sophia Aleksandravicius paced the 'Cats' offense with her 15th double-double on 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Laura Murray dropped in 16 points. Barbara Sitton had eight points and five assists.
The Mocs' were led by Ashlen Dewart's 24 points to go with nine rebounds. She scored 12 points apiece in both halves, and got six of her second-half points during a game-changing 13-5 run to give UTC an 11-point lead (58-47) with 6:03 remaining.
Kayla Christopher added 11 points for Chattanooga, which shot an even 50 percent for the game.
Down by seven, Davidson cut its deficit to three, 45-42, on a Murray jumper and two free throws by Aleksandravicius with 9:43 left. Chattanooga answered with a 13-5 run over the next 3:40 to push its advantage to its biggest lead at the time, 58-47.
The 'Cats had to play catch-up the rest of the way, getting no closer than eight points the remainder of the game.
The first half featured five times and five lead changes. Aleksandravicius scored eight straight early to make it 16-11. The Mocs tied things up then at 23-all, before outscoring the Wildcats 8-5 in the last five minutes to go into the break up 31-28.
Davidson, which set a school-record with its eighth road win in a row last time out, shot 40.8 percent for the game, but just 35.7 percent in the second half (10-28). The Wildcats did hit 16-of-21 free throws, while holding a 32-31 edge on the glass.
The Wildcats finish out their four-game road swing, visiting Elon this Saturday afternoon, March 2, at 2 p.m.
GAME NOTES: The Wildcats have won 14 of its last 17 games … Davidson dropped its 14th game in a row on the road in the all-time series to Chattanooga … Davidson still has won 27 of its last 32 SoCon games dating back to last January 13, 2012 … the Wildcats are 9-7 on the road overall and 8-1 in SoCon games … the eight straight SoCon road wins tied a school-best.
