DAVIDSON, N.C. - Chris Dyer drove in four runs and
Andrew Barna went 4-for-5 to lead Davidson in a 13-6 victory over Lafayette, Saturday night in Wilson Field. Rain early in the day forced cancelation of Davidson's game against Georgetown that had been rescheduled to be played following the Davidson-Lafayette game Saturday after being postponed due to rain Friday.
Dyer finished the day going 3-for-5 for Davidson (3-1). Centerfielder
Forrest Brandt and shortstop
Michael Zeblo both went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Sophomore RHP
Ryan Lowe (2-0) and the Wildcats' bullpen held Lafayette (0-2) to six hits, while the 'Cats posted 16.
An RBI-double by left fielder Andrew Ruck (2-for-4) in the first inning gave the Leopards a short-lived lead. With two runners on, Brandt hit a triple down the right field line that rolled to the fence, and a throw in the dirt by the cutoff man bounced away from the third baseman, allowing Brandt to score on the play for a 3-1 Davidson lead.
The Wildcats used infield hits to pad their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. A lead-off double by Zeblo, a walk by left fielder
Ty Middlebrooks and a bunt by right fielder
Nathan Becker (2-for-4, 3 runs) loaded the bases for Dyer, who drove in a run on a bouncer that went off the pitcher and did not reach the shortstop in time to get any outs. After Middlebrooks scored on a double play, freshman
Sam Foy (2-for-5) drove in another run with an infield hit.
The Leopards got one run back in the top of the fifth inning, but after Middlebrooks escaped a potential rundown following a Becker double and scored on a missed cut-off throw, Dyer singled to left to drive in Becker for an 8-2 lead.
Lafayette cut the lead to four in the top of the sixth on a two-RBI double by catcher Parker Hills (2-for-4), but Zeblo answered in the bottom half for Davidson, driving in two on a single up the middle. Ruck and second baseman Kevin Casey (1-for-3) hit back-to-back home runs for the Leopards in the seventh to pull within four again, but RHP
Matt Saeta held them scoreless over the final two innings, and the 'Cats added three more runs in the eighth for the final margin.
Lowe allowed two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out six in 5.0 innings. RHP Alex Farina (0-1) took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out two.
Davidson and Lafayette will face each other again at Wilson Field at 12 p.m. Sunday, and then Davidson and Georgetown wil play approximately 30 minutes after that game concludes.
