ELON, N.C. – Elon's Nicole Dennion would breakup a tie game with a pair goals late in the second half and Davidson was unable to counter in falling 3-1 on the road in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Women's Soccer Tournament Sunday at Rudd Field.
Elon (12-2-6) advances to the semifinals to play the winner of UNCG/Wofford, Nov. 8. Davidson saw its 25th season come to an end with a 6-11-4 overall record. The Wildcats, who played in their final SoCon Tournament as they will be moving to the Atlantic-10 next season, was making their 10th straight appearance in the league tourney.
Tied at 1-apiece, Dennion's game-winner came in the 86th minute when she broke free from her defender in the box and had a clean look at the goal, firing in a shot to left post.
She added an insurance goal shortly thereafter at the 87:18 mark, taking a pass from Simi Dhaliwal in the near corner on the left side, turning and chipping a shot to the far post over the outstretched hand of goalkeeper Rachel Locke. Dennion pushed her SoCon-best goal total to 15 on the season.
Davidson attacked and struck early to grab the lead first. Julia Singley gathered a pass down in the near corner and then feed a ball to Becca Fisher at the top of the box. Fisher finished it off with her second goal of the season with a hard shot to the near post for a 1-0 Wildcat lead just six minutes into the start of the game.
Elon would get off four first-half shots, with Locke stopping three of them, but Davidson's defense held strong to take the one-goal lead into the break.
The game though would get tied up at the 62:44 mark. Elon's Dhaliwal headed a bending shot from the near side to the far post just past a diving Locke in goal. Kimmie Krauss set the play up with a cross into the box.
Locke finished with her three saves from the first half, while Elon's Sydney Branson and Kate Murphy split time in goal and combined for four saves.
It was the final collegiate games of seniors Meg Sanborn, Lindsay Blum, Kelsey Krueger, Tori Krause, Renae Cairns, Lauren Swany and Lauren Mihan.
