DAVIDSON, N.C. – Elise Lankiewicz broke the Davidson record in the 1,000-yard freestyle in helping the Wildcats to a successful Saturday as the women's team posted victories over Asheville (187-87) and VMI (201-55), while the men downed VMI by a score of 176-105. The Clemson women's diving team also participated in the meet.
"For both teams to swim well, at this time of year, is a testament to their focus," said head coach John Young. "It is also a credit to all the families that made the trip to support us on family weekend – I know that the athletes were excited to perform and I am proud of our approach today."
Lankiewicz earned the win in the 1,000-yard free with a time of 10:15.25, shaving nearly two seconds off of the previous record of 10:17.02 set in 2009 by Alanna Ream. The freshman also picked up a win in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:09.31 while also posting the top time in the 100-yard butterfly in an exhibition swim
"Elise has quickly demonstrated her performance potential to her teammates and the swimming community," said Young, "She deserves congratulations on her first Davidson College record-breaking performance, that swim is another great step along the path towards what she is ultimately capable of."
The women's 200-yard medley relay started the meet off with a victory. Lauren Malachowski, Meredith Nakano, Katy Williams and Erika Clancy combined for a time of 1:49.50 in the win. The men's team had a trio of relays finish in the top three, led by the quartet of Adam Hunter, Spencer Gill, Will Fox and Luke Burton with a winning time of 1:36.91.
Anna Blair Bullock was the runner up to Lankiewicz in the 1000 free, touching the pads in 10:43.11. Megan McLeod was fourth in 11:06.06. Max Schimanski won the men's event, finishing in a time of 16:34.86.
Angie Healy claimed victory in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.77 and was followed closely by Liz Mace in second with a time of 1:58.26. Ben Stewart-Bates and Brandon Kegley also provided a one-two punch in the men's race. Stewart-Bates took top honors in 1:45.63 while Kegley touched the wall in 1:47.05.
The Wildcats' success continued in the 100-yard backstroke, as both sides claimed the top two spots in the event. Malachowski earned her first individual victory of the day, breaking the minute barrier to finish in 59.76. She was followed by Kassie Shannon in 1:02.67. Burton was the men's winner in a time of 52.37, followed by Hunter in 54.81.
In the 100-yard breaststroke, Meredith Nakano was the 'Cats top finisher with a mark of 1:06.41. Williams was second with a time of 1:07.41, followed by Caroline Vrana in third with a time of 1:09.18. The Davidson men took the top four spots in the event as Spencer Gill (1:00.37), Drew Gill (1:00.74), Thomas Bigham (1:01.21) and Drew Glenn (1:01.68) crowded the finish.
The women's team matched that feat in the 200-yard butterfly. Following Lankiewicz was Emily Covert in second (2:11.21), Kate Carter in third (2:19.74) and Megan McLeod in fourth (2:20.42). The men took the top three slots, led by Fox in a time of 1:57.57. Spencer Davies took second with a time of 2:01.36, followed by Davied Sanchez in third at 2:02.58.
Clancy and Healy added another one-two punch in the 50-yard freestyle, with Clancy touching in 24.55 for the win followed by Healy in second at 24.95. Cameron Bard took top honors in the men's race in a time of 21.54. Chris Cardwell was third with a time of 22.80.
Healy claimed her second win of the day in the 100-yard freestyle at 54.19, while Burton was men's top finisher in a time of 47.80. He barely beat out teammate Bard, who was the runner-up in 47.81. Kegley finished third in 48.50, as did Clancy in the women's event in 55.17. Colin MacKay finished fourth in 50.16 to help the Wildcats take the top four spots.
Malachowski won the 200-yard backstroke, clocking in at 2:10.43. Hunter was second in the men's event in a time of 1:58.52.
With her second victory of the day, Nakano led the women's 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:24.11. The men once again went 1-2-3-4, led by Grant Smith's first-place finish in a time of 2:09.28. Spencer Gill followed him in 2:14.36 while Luke Boliek was third in a time of 2:17.22. Drew Gill rounded out the group in fourth at 2:18.41.
Bullock earned her second victory of the meet in the 500-yard free, cruising to the win in 5:15.57. Schimanski posted the top time in the men's event with a 4:53.09. Fox swam a 51.27 for the top time in the 100-yard fly in an exhibition swim.
Emily Covert and Grant Smith posted top times in the 200-yard IM events at 2:14.50 and 1:58.45, respectively.
Lankiewicz, Malachowski, Healy and Mace posted the top time in the 400-yard free relay with a mark of 3:36.54. The men's squad of Bard, Glenn, Gill and Ethan Levinson earned the victory in a time of 3:19.42.
In the 1-meter diving event, Kaliya Burton-Akright earned the win vs. VMI (eighth overall) with a score of 229.50. Karen Monuszko took second against the Keydets (11th overall) with a score of 210.00. The due also led Davidson in the 3-meter event, with Burton-Akright again claiming the win vs. VMI (seventh overall) with a score of 233.95. Monuszko was the runner-up vs. VMI (eight overall) with 218.90 points.
Brian McRae won the men's 3-meter event, putting up a 241.15-point effort. Jonathan Oberti was third with a score of 153.95. McRae also took the 1-meter with 257.05 points, with Oberti again taking third with 149.80 points.
The Wildcats will travel to south Charlotte next Saturday for an 11 a.m. meet at Queens University. The women will face the Royals and the Campbell Camels, while the men will face Queens in dual meet action.
