GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Davidson swimming and diving teams finished up their season opening meet with another day of great performances at the All-North Carolina Invitational, hosted by N.C. State at the Greensboro Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon.
The women's squad took third place overall with 920.5 points. Host N.C. State won the event with 1,556 points, while East Carolina took second with 1,464.5 points. The Davidson men finished fourth with 810 points, also behind host N.C. State (1,449.5 points), ECU (1,360) and Wingate (872).
The women's 200-yard medley relay came in ninth to start day two. Meredith Nakano, Angie Healy, Elise Lankiewicz and Erica Clancy combined for a time of 1:49.34. Lankiewicz and Nakano later competed in the 100-yard butterfly, taking ninth and 12th, respectively. Lankiewicz finished in 57.60, while Nakano swam a 59.01.
Healy went on to grab a tenth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the pads in 1:55.29. She also joined Kassie Shannon in the 100-yard backstroke. Shannon was the 'Cats top finisher in the event, coming in 20th in 1:01.22 while Healy was 21st in a time of 1:01.33.
Newcomer Katy Williams swam the 100-yard breaststroke, taking tenth place. She finished in a time of 1:07.25 and was joined in the event by Nakano, who took 16th in 1:08.48. Williams then took eighth in the 200-yard event, touching in 2:24.92.
Emily Covert took 14th in her first individual event of the session, touching the wall in 4:42.58 in the 400-yard IM. Kate Carter was close behind, clocking in 18th in 4:49.27.
Anna Blair Bullock picked up another top-ten finish, placing eighth in the 1650 free. She swam a time of 18:14.68. Megan McLeod followed in 14th, touching in 18:38.10.
Healy was again the top finisher in the 200-yard backstroke, touching the pads 18th in 2:11.69. Lauren Malachowski followed suit, finishing 23rd in a time of 2:13.24. Relay mates Nakano and Clancy tied for 15th in the 100-yard free, both clocking in 54.63. Lankiewicz finished seventh in the 200-yard butterfly, touching the pads in 2:06.23.
The women then wrapped things up with a 13th place finish in the 400-yard free relay. Bullock, Malachowski, Shannon and Liz Mace combined for a time of 3:39.81.
Like the women, the men's 200-yard relay also grabbed a top ten finish. Luke Burton, Will Fox, Spencer Gill and Cameron Bard teamed for ninth place with a time of 1:36.17. Fox later went on to take 13th in the 100-yard fly, touching in 52.40, while Gill finished 18th in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 59.55.
Burton picked up ninth in the 100-yard back, finishing in 52.91. He was joined by Josh Schammel, who swam a 54.01 to take 14th in the race.
Grant Smith started his day off in the 400 IM, touching ninth overall. He swam a 4:09.11 in the event.
In the 200-yard free, both Dylan Ludwick and Ben Stewart-Bates claimed top-15 finishes. Ludwick claimed seventh in 1:42.34, while Stewart-Bates was 12th in 1:45.44. Ludwick and Max Schimanski went on to take seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 1650. Ludwick touched in 16:37.25 while Schimanski swam a 16:45.07.
In the diving events, Kaliya Burton-Akright led the way in the 1-meter with a fourth-place finish with a score of 225.45. Karen Monuszko took fourth in the 3-meter with a score of 245.35. On the men's side, Brian McRae took fourth in the 1-meter (192.10) and third in the 3-meter (202.75). Jonathan Oberti claimed fifth in the 1-meter event, scoring 127.05 and was fourth in the 3-meter with a score of 113.30.
The Wildcats return home to Cannon Pool next weekend when they host East Carolina in a 1 p.m. dual meet.
