DAVIDSON, N.C. — Hosting its second invitational in a row at home, Davidson wrapped up its first day of the Jim Causey Invitational on Friday against visting teams Charlotte, Appalachian State and Campbell at the Covington Tennis Courts.
The invitational is a points system, with points being determined based on position, with No. 1 singles being 16 points and going two points down at each position to No. 8, which is worth two points. The top doubles spot is worth eight points and going down to No. 4, which is worth two.
Davidson played eight singles matches and four doubles matches on the first day, facing Campbell and App. State.
Taking home a win in singles action was freshman Ricky Saad at No. 3 vs. Campbell. The first-year player rattled off a 7-6, 6-4 triumph to score 12 points on the day.
Sophomore duo Evan Watkins and Alex Howard nearly scored wins for themselves, both falling in third-set super tie-breakers. Waktins, playing at No. 6 vs. Campbell, dropped a first-set tie-breaker, 7-6, before regrouping for a 6-4 triumph to force the super tie-breaker. He battled before falling in the end, 10-6.
Howard won his first set, 7-6, before falling in the second set, 6-4, to his Campbell opponent. He went down to the wire, forcing an extra point, but fell in the end 11-9 in the tie-breaker.
The duo came back and won a doubles match as Howard teamed with Ted Bolton to score an 8-2 decision at No. 4 for two points vs. ASU. Waktins and freshman Jordan Hart also netted an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles vs. Campbell to give them four points.
