‘Cats Wrap Up Fall Season With Successful Weekend

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team had a successful two-day run at their cross-county rival's invite, the Charlotte Invitational, Oct. 25-26, as the Wildcats wrapped up their 2013 Fall season.
Three individuals came home with a winning record in singles action, while two of the three doubles teams had winning marks as well.
Elaina Cummer had the best showing in singles, going 3-0, while the No. 2 doubles team of Jenna Brunner and Nisha Crouser sported a 3-0 record over the weekend. Both Cummer and Brunner had 10 combined wins on the weekend in singles and doubles.
Cummer, playing at the No. 2 position, earned a pair of straight set wins vs. USC Upstate (6-2, 6-1) and Charlotte (6-1, 6-3). Her finally victory came the way of a super tie-breaker win as the second-year player won 10-8 after splitting her first two sets, 2-6, 6-3, against Kourtney Kowal of Coastal Carolina.
Earning a pair of singles wins was Brites Moniz-Soares and Brunner. The senior No. 1 player, Moniz-Soares, tallied a super tie-breaker win against her Charlotte opponent, 2-6, 6-0, 10-8. After falling to Libby Scott of Coastal, 6-1, 6-0, Moniz-Soares regrouped for a solid 6-0, 6-2 victory against USC-Upstate's Anna Zoske.
Brunner played at the No. 5 singles slot, scoring 7-5, 7-5 and 7-5, 6-3 wins against a pair of Coastal Carolina opponents. She nearly had a perfect weekend, pushing Dominique De Wit from Coastal to a super tie-breaker after both players split the first two sets, 3-6, 6-3. The freshman's run ended there as she dropped the tie-breaker, 12-10.
Crouser and Elise Held each netted a singles win at No. 3 and 4 positions, respectively. Crouser picked up a 7-6(3), 6-4 triumph against her 49er opponent, before falling 6-2, 6-3 to Coastal's Honami Yazawa.
Held scored a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Charlotte's Jessica Perez. She came close to picking up another singles win, falling in a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 battle to USC-Upstate.
In doubles action, Brunner and Crouser rolled to a couple of 8-2 wins against two Coastal doubles teams at No. 2. The duo's final win came in a tie-breaker, scoring a 10-8 victory to earn an 8-7 win in the set.
Cummer and Moniz-Soares earned two wins at No. 1, taking 8-2 and 8-7(4) decisions against USC-Upstate and Charlotte.
The final Wildcat doubles team of Held and Tamara Hill picked up a 8-3 victory against Charlotte's No. 3 squad for their lone win of the weekend.
Davidson will start its Spring season, Jan. 18, on the road at Virginia Tech.
