Davidson M. Tennis Competes at Wake Forest Fall Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Wildcat men's tennis team competed in their third Fall event, taking part in the Wake Forest Invitational over the weekend, Oct. 11-13.
Four Wildcats took part in the invite, with Evan Watkins and Jordan Hart having solid showings in singles play. Watkins reached the finals of the D1 Singles bracket. The sophomore started his weekend with a 7-6, 6-3 triumph against Liberty. Watkins then reached the finals after a 6-2, 6-4 semis win against Alex Weber of cross-county rival Charlotte. His weekend was halted there, falling in a hard-fought 6-3, 7-5 defeat to Miles Holvoet of East Carolina.
Hart competed in the D2 Singles draw. The first-year player lost his first match, a tough 6-4, 7-6 decision, but regrouped on the consolation side to score a 6-0, 6-1 victory vs. LR. Hart captured the consolation finals after Dan Sablik of Elon withdrew.
Alex Howard and Ricky Saad each took part in the A1 Singles and B1 Singles draws, respectively. Saad lost his first match, 6-1, 6-3, then battled to a three-set affair with Charlotte's Jack Williams, before falling 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
Howard had a tough go of it, falling 6-4, 6-3 to Stetson in his first match, then lost a 6-4, 6-2 decision to Liberty. His weekend came to end with a defeat to East Carolina on the consolation side.
In doubles action, Davidson's pair of Saad and Watkins, and Howard and Hart each took part in the C and D Doubles draw. Saad and Watkins finished seventh, winning their first match in a tight 8-7 decision to Liberty. The duo then dropped an 8-3 match to Wake Forest followed by an 8-6 defeat to South Carolina St. They came back to close the weekend out with a solid 8-4 win vs. East Carolina.
Howard and Hart reached the consolation finals after falling 8-2 in the first round to East Carolina. They stormed back with an 8-5 win, before falling in their final match of the day, 8-7 to Norfolk State.
Davidson will head to the ITA Carolinas Regional in Chapel Hill, N.C. next, Oct. 17-20.
