DAVIDSON, N.C. – Bobby Edet netted a pair of late first-half goals 41 seconds apart to lead nationally-ranked Furman past Davidson, 2-0, in Southern Conference men's soccer action Saturday evening at Alumni Stadium.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 6-5-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the league, while the No. 15 Paladins extended their unbeaten streak to nine, improving to 8-1-2 and 1-0-2.
"The good news is that for 89 minutes we did very well and were arguably the better team on the field tonight," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. "More shots, more corner kicks, more quality chances. But soccer can be cruel and for one minute we let our guard down and they capitalized."
"Take nothing away from Furman. They are a talented, ranked team and their match tonight was efficient. Two goals and another shut out. It's not by accident they only have one loss this season and have only allowed 5 goals in 11 games."
Furman broke open a scoreless contest at the 36:45 mark when Martin Ontiveros played the ball down the side to Edet, who finished well to the back post to make it 1-0. Edet's second goal of the night and sixth of the season came less than a minute later off a counter attack as he beat Wildcat keeper Matt Pacifici to the right from a tough angle.
"Bobby Edet turned the game for their favor. We were prepared for him as a starter and maybe that helped Furman that he came in to the game as a sub. His speed is big time and he calmly finished the two chances when he got behind our back line. For curiosity, I want to see the video on the second goal as it was close to offside. And our guys can learn from this to deal better with an especially fast striker," Spear commented.
Despite the setback, the Wildcats finished with a 10-7 advantage in shots, while edging the Paladins in corner kicks, 5-4.
The Wildcats' best chance came in the 66th minute when Drew Brown connected with Max Pragnell on a cross, but the freshman's attempt from just in front sailed high of frame.
Davidson's leading scorer Valeriy Sviderskiy also had a good opportunity just minutes earlier when he beat the Paladin defense down the sideline, but missed wide of the far post.
"So although it was not a winning performance - and that stings as we aimed to win and did a lot to make that happen - we know that that we can compete, stick to our plan, and play good soccer."
Both keepers finished with a pair of saves.
Davidson will travel to conference rival UNCG Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tilt.
