DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team looks to start the year out on a strong note when they begin their 2013 Spring season by traveling to ACC-foe Virginia Tech this Sunday, Jan. 20, to play the Hokies in a 10 a.m. match. The Wildcats will be looking for their first win in the all-time series.
Following Sunday's match, the Wildcats will play 10 of their next 11 matches at home, starting with a doubleheader against Radford and Brevard College, Jan. 26.
Davidson finished out its Fall season by capturing four singles titles at its own invitational, Oct. 28.
In anticipation of the 2013 season, below is a look at the Season Preview....
Now in her 31st season at the helm, head coach Caroline Price will enter the 2013 campaign seeking to capture the program's first Southern Conference tournament title after finishing runner-up three times in the last eight years.
The Wildcats look to regroup after a 5-19 mark, 2-8 in the SoCon, a season ago. It was just the second time since 2001 they had a record below .500. Nine of the last 12 years though they have had a winning mark, and of coach Price's 30 seasons, the Wildcats have finished at or above .500 in 23 of them. Despite last year's tough season, coach Price pushed her win total to 406.
This year's club will feature the return of eight letterwinners from last season, including six players who all saw significant time in the starting lineup led by All-Southern Conference Second Team pick Brites Moniz-Soares.
Singles
Davidson finished with 37 singles wins last year, led by Moniz-Soares' team-high 15. The 'Cats collected 15 of their wins against SoCon foes.
• Senior Stephani Synn: The Wildcats' main No. 1 singles player a season ago ... played 17 matches there ... enters her final season with 19 career wins, 10 of them coming against league opponents.
• Senior #Catherine Wood3: Earned four singles wins at No. 5 and 6 positions ... started last year with back-to-back wins over UNC Asheville and Gardner-Webb ... scored first career SoCon win against Western Carolina, with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking.
• Junior Frizzi Bschorer: Played in 18 singles matches a year ago at No. 4-6 ... netted two of her three singles wins at No. 6 against Gardner-Webb and Wofford ... has five career singles wins in first two years, with two of them coming against league foes.
• Junior Nisha Crouser: Second on the team with seven singles wins ... played 19 matches at No. 3 and 4, getting six of her seven wins there ... scored a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 vs. North Carolina A&T ... went 7-15 overall and 3-7 vs. the SoCon.
• Junior Elise Held: Played at the No. 3-6 singles slots during second year ... played in 13 matches, going 3-10 ... picked up a pair of SoCon singles wins.
• Junior Tamara Hill: Did not seen any official action during the Spring or Fall seasons last year.
• Junior Brites Moniz-Soares: Had an outstanding second year, leading the team with 15 singles wins in 2012 ... sported a 15-6 record overall, going 14-3 at No. 2 ... it was the second-most wins in the?SoCon at that position ... named to the second-team All-SoCon ... is again expected to fill the No. 2 slot in 2013 and might see some time at No. 1 as well.
• Sophomore Blake Nickles: Played in three matches during first collegiate Spring season ... all three matches were played at No. 6 ... earned a singles title this Fall at the Davidson Invite I.
Newcomers
• Freshman Elaina Cummer: No. 1 singles player at Plano West Senior ... ranked No. 3 in the Texas Section 18 and as high as No. 54 on tennisrecruiting.net ... in first Fall event this year as a Wildcat, took home the No. 2 singles title at the Davidson Invite I.
• Freshman Courtney McCray: Four-year letterwinner at Pembroke Hill in Fairway, Kan. ... was a team captain ... earned All-Metro ... earned fifth place at Missouri Class 1 State Championship in singles ... like Cummer, netted a singles title at Davidson's first Fall event, going 2-0.
Doubles
Davidson's doubles teams finished the 2012 season with 16 wins and netted six of them in SoCon matches. The Wildcats used nine doubles teams, compared to 17 different combinations at all three positions a year ago.
• No. 1 position: Crouser and Synn were the 'Cats' main No. 1 team last year, playing 11 matches at the top spot ... the pair had just one win ... Synn and Moniz-Soares also teamed up at No. 1, going 2-4, getting both wins against league foes.
• No. 2 position: Three different teams were tried at the No. 2 slot, with Katharine Dicconson and Moniz-Soares having the most success ... the since graduated senior and sophomore last year went 5-5, winning four of their first five matches to open the year ... the duo went a team-best 6-5 overall and 1-1 vs. the SoCon ... Crouser and Dicconson also filled in at No. 2, going 2-4, while Held and Wood earned a 1-1 mark ... the No. 2 slot produced eight of the 16 total wins the Wildcats collected in doubles action, going 8-10 overall.
• No. 3 position: Davidson used four different teams at No. 3 doubles a year ago ... Held and Wood played six times there, while Bschorer and Held played five matches ... Bschorer and Wood had the best mark, going 2-3 with wins against N.C. A&T and USC Upstate.
The Schedule
Davidson will open the season on the road at Virginia Tech, before playing 10 of its next 11 matches at the friendly confines of Covington Tennis Courts. The Wildcats have faced the Hokies 17 times, falling in all 17 of them. The Hokies went 12-13 a year ago.
Davidson will face Radford, Brevard, UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb, USC Upstate, Wingate, Belmont Abbey, East Carolina and Georgia Southern all at home in the next nine matches. A year ago saw the Wildcats go 2-1 against three of those opponents. This will be the first time the Wildcats have faced Brevard, which went 13-9 a year ago. Radford went 17-7 a season ago, the second-most wins in school history, and had the Big South Coach of the Year in Bruce Harrison.
The only other non-conference team Davidson will face is cross-county rival Charlotte, Apr. 12. The two crosstown teams have faced each other 26 times, with the 'Cats owning a 16-10 all-time record. The 49ers took a 6-1 decision a season ago and have the last two contests. They are coming off a 16-6 campaign in 2011-12.
This will be the third time in the past five years the Wildcats open SoCon play against Georgia Southern. They will be looking to avenge a 4-2 defeat last year in Statesboro, Ga.
Davidson plays four of its first six league matches on the road, traveling to Elon (Mar. 20), UNCG (Mar. 24), Samford (Mar. 29 and Chattanoga (Mar. 30).
Davidson has finished with at least seven wins in the SoCon in six of the last nine years.
The SoCon Tournament takes place April 18-21 in Burlington, N.C., as Elon is the host. Davidson had an early exit last year, falling 4-1 to the Georgia Southern Eagles in the first round.
The College of Charleston women's tennis team won its fourth consecutive Southern Conference Tennis Tournament with a 4-0 victory over UNCG. Prior to that, Furman had won the past five championships.
The Wildcats have reached the finals three times in the past eight seasons, but have yet to bring home the tournament title.
