JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A double-double from Caroline Brown wasn't enough for the Davidson volleyball team, who dropped a 3-2 decision to North Florida in the final game of the UNF/Radisson Invitational on Saturday evening.
Brown recorded a team-high 19 kills and 21 digs. She also accounted for five blocks and two service aces in the match. Ariel Ley and Molly Crenshaw recorded 48 assists and 36 digs, respectively, while Tindall Sewell added 14 kills and a pair of assists. Sewell and Hannah Rau each put up five blocks in the match for the 'Cats, who fall to 3-4 on the season with the loss. Taylor Pisel also factored into the scoring for the Wildcats with 10 kills.
Crenshaw earned all-tournament team honors for her efforts.
Carolyn Jenkins and Anna Budinska each posted 17 kills for UNF, while Nicole Baran had 33 digs on the night. Britt Claessen's 60 assists led the way for the Ospreys, as did Jenkins's five blocks.
The 'Cats controlled the first set from the start, shooting out to an 11-2 lead on a block by Sewell and Brown. The Ospreys were forced to call a timeout, but still could not compose themselves as Davidson took a 15-7 lead on back-to-back kills by Rau. Kills by Sewell and Brown, along with a slew of UNF miscues, put the 'Cats in front 22-14 and they rode the lead until the end. A kill by Rachel Earnhardt put the set away 25-18 and put the 'Cats up 1-0.
The second set was much of the same for the Wildcats, who found themselves ahead 8-2 on a block by Brown and Rau. The advantage would remain at six with a kill by Rau, making it 12-6. However, North Florida scored six straight points to tie the set at 12-12 soon after. The Wildcats quickly swayed things back in their favor, as consecutive kills by Brown capped a 6-0 scoring run that put them in front, 18-12. They were able to finish things off from there, taking a 2-0 match lead after earning the 25-21 win in set number two.
It was a tougher battle for the 'Cats in the third set, as the Ospreys took a slim 10-8 lead. After UNF stretched its lead to 15-12, the Wildcats fought back with three straight points to tie the game at 15-15. A kill by Sewell and a pair of errors by UNF then put Davidson in front 20-18. The Ospreys tied things up once again 21-21 and put together a 3-1 run to take the set 25-23 and force a fourth set.
Davidson scored the first three points of the fourth set, but UNF would fight back to tie the game early on at 3-3. The teams tied things up once again at 10-10, and the squads would continue on a tight battle for the rest of the match. A service ace by Brown put Davidson up by two, but the Ospreys would come back to win the set 25-23 and tie the match at 2-2.
UNF controlled the final set from the start, taking a 5-1 lead. The 'Cats picked up a pair of points, but the Osprey scored five straight to take a 10-point advantage. A kill by Paige Pridgeon closed things out as the 'Cats took the 15-5 loss to fall 3-2 in the match.
The 'Cats will host UW-Green Bay, High Point and NC Central at Belk Arena next weekend for the Wildcat Classic. Davidson will kick things off on Friday at 7 p.m. when they take on the Panthers of High Point.
