Today's Game
• Davidson will play its final non-conference game and final evening home game when Big South member Presbyterian College visits Richardson Stadium for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
• This will be a battle of two of the smallest football schools in Division I. Davidson, with an enrollment of 1,900 (third smallest), will have the rare opportunity to play a smaller school in Presbyterian, which has an enrollment of just 1,200, the least in D1 football.
• For the fifth year in a row, college football coaches nationwide will join together in support of the Coach To Cure MD program, which will be held during games today. Head coach Tripp Merritt and the rest of the Davidson football coaching staff are wearing Coach To Cure MD logo patches on the sidelines in support of the cause.
• The rapidly growing annual effort has raised more than a million dollars to battle Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
• Football fans can donate to Duchenne muscular dystrophy research by either going online to www.CoachtoCureMD.org or by texting the word CURE to 90999 (a $5 donation will automatically be added to your next phone bill).
• The Wildcats return home for the first time since the season opener against Georgetown on Sept. 1. The past three weeks included two road games with a bye week in between.
• This game kicks off a three-game homestand and a stretch of four home games in five weeks.
• The 'Cats will not leave the state of North Carolina again until their Nov. 3 game at Morehead State (Ky.), as their lone road game in October is at Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C.
• Davidson linebacker Patrick Moynahan is the reigning PFL Defensive Player of the Week after posting the best single-game tackling performance so far this season in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision with 22 stops, a new school record. He leads the FCS with 2.33 tackles for loss per game, and leads the PFL and is third in the nation with 13.33 tackles per game.
• Moynahan and defensive back Dan Casey earned College Football Performance Awards Honorable Mentions for their performances at Marist last week. Casey is tied for third in the nation and second in the PFL with 2.00 tackles for loss per game.
• As a team Davidson ranks third in the FCS and leads the PFL?with 9.00 tackles per game.
• Senior WR Lanny Funsten currently is third in the PFL with 6.0 receptions per game and fourth with 69.3 yards receiving per game. Funsten was recognized as a Preseason All-PFL honoree in addition to preseason FCS All-American honors by College Sporting News, The Sports Network and BeyondSportsCollegeNetwork.com. He is the PFL's active career leader in pass receptions (169) and reception yards (2030).
• The Wildcats return 12 starters and 43 lettermen from last year's squad that went 4-7 overall and 2-6 in the PFL.
• Presbyterian returns 17 starters and 48 letterwinners from a team that finished 4-7 overall and tied for fourth in the Big South?with a 3-3 record.
• Since moving to Division I in 2007, the Blue Hose are 3-30 on the road.
• After winning its season opener over Brevard, Presbyterian has lost to Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt and Furman.
• The 'Cats were picked ninth in the PFL preseason poll while PC was picked fourth in the Big South.
Series Record
• Davidson leads the all-time series 14-13-2, but the teams have played just once since 1988, meeting in Clinton, S.C. in 2010.
• Twenty-six of the 29 meetings came before 1968.
• The series began in 1919 as the 'Cats and Blue Hose played to a 0-0 tie.
• Presbyterian last took to the gridiron at Davidson in 1988 when current Wildcats head coach Tripp Merritt was still a student at UNC?Charlotte and associate head coach Brett Hayford was still a year away from attending Davidson as a student-athlete.
• In their last meeting in 2010, Presbyterian College scored touchdowns on its first three offensive drives and added three more in the second half en route to a 42-6 victory over Davidson in the season finale for both teams.
• Trandon Dandy led the Blue Hose on the ground with 163 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns, while Lance Byrd added 88 yards on 16 carries and a touchdown. Myron Gary and Ryan Singer combined to complete 13 of 20 pass attempts for 235 yards and three touchdowns. Michael Ruff led a group five receivers that had two receptions each with 96 yards and touchdowns on both receptions.
• Jonathan Carkhuff completed 17 of 29 passes for 144 yards with one interception for Davidson. Kenny Mantuo led the 'Cats on the ground with 83 yards on 16 carries with one touchdown. Mark Hanabury totaled six receptions, while Jonathan Adams led in receiving yards with 76 on four receptions.
• John Behm recorded 2.5 sacks and 10 tackles to lead the 'Cats defense. Malcolm Moses-Hampton and Ellis Martin each recorded sacks.
• Davidson found the end zone on their second drive of the game. On 3rd-and-4, Carkhuff scrambled left to elude the PC pass rush, and found Adams downfield on the left sideline for a 51-yard gain to the one-yard line. Mantuo rushed up the middle for the touchdown on the next play.
Last Time Out
• Davidson linebacker Patrick Moynahan made a school-record 22 tackles but Marist fended off a late Davidson rally to hang on for a 34-21 win in the Pioneer Football League opener for both teams last Saturday at Tenney Stadium.
• A Davidson (0-3, 0-1 PFL) touchdown with 5:31 remaining pulled the Wildcats within two scores, and then on Marist's next possession, AJ Pignone came in unblocked to sack Marist quarterback Chuckie Looney and force a fumble that was recovered by Davidson's Weston Hawkins at the Marist 13-yard line with 4:03 remaining. Attempting to pull within a touchdown, a scramble by quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff moved the 'Cats inside the 10-yard line, but Carkhuff's fourth-down pass bounced off the intended receiver as he was hit by a defender in the end zone, and it was intercepted by Paul Sakowski at the one-yard line.
• Looney and receiver Mike Rios connected on three touchdown plays. Looney completed 17-of-26 passes for 403 yards and four touchdowns, while Rios made eight catches for 244 yards and three touchdowns.
• Carkhuff completed 25-of-45 pass attempts for Davidson for a season-high 274 yards and was intercepted twice. Chris Trinetti was his top target with four receptions for 36 yards and Reese Williams led the team with 59 yards receiving and scored a touchdown. • Lanny Funsten had at least seven receptions in each game in 2011, and had continued that streak into 2012, but was held to just three receptions.
