DAVIDSON, N.C. – Winners of four straight, Davidson will open its 2012 Southern Conference slate with a 7 p.m. contest against UNCG Tuesday evening at Alumni Stadium.
“We are really excited to host the defending regular season SoCon champs to kickoff conference play,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “UNCG is definitely better than their record lets on. Two of their recent losses were to ranked teams (N.C. State and Coastal Carolina) and they also tied Charlotte, last season's NCAA Tournament runner-up.”
In the midst of their longest winning streak since the 2009 season, the Wildcats enter 4-2-1 following a 3-0 blanking of Presbyterian Friday evening.
Valeriy Sviderskiy, last week's SoCon Player of the Week, ran his scoring streak to three games with his fourth goal in the last three contests. The freshman, who leads Davidson with four goals, provided the eventual game-winner against the Blue Hose in the 37th minute.
The Wildcats also got goals from Brian McGue and Alex Feliciano en route to their first shutout of the season.
Senior Andrew DiLallo (3G, 2A) is tied with Sviderskiy for the team lead in total points with eight.
UNCG comes into the 26th all-time meeting 2-4-2 on the campaign following a 2-1 setback to nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina over the weekend.
Despite their record, the Spartans are averaging just under two goals per contest, Hakan Ilhan, who has found the back of the net five times in 2012.
“They returned most of their top players from last season, including senior forward Hakan Ilhan, who can be a lethal goal scorer if allowed space and opportunity,” commented Spear.
Dating back to 2008, Davidson is 1-1-2 against UNCG.
“For us, we want to continue our recent winning ways and play with confidence, urgency, enthusiasm, and cohesion.”
